Woman Recounts Chilling Stalker Encounter After Offering Help on Delhi Metro

A Reddit post detailed how a woman was followed after helping a stranger in Delhi Metro.

Delhi’s long-standing concerns over women’s safety were reignited after a disturbing account shared by a Reddit user detailed a harrowing experience aboard the Delhi Metro. The woman, using the handle @taerin_yapper, described being relentlessly followed by a man after she offered him directions at a metro station.

In her post, she explained that the man, seemingly in his 30s, appeared confused about which platform to go to. After she helped him, he thanked her and asked, “Are you also going there?” Thinking nothing of it, she confirmed and moved ahead to catch her train. However, what followed left her shaken.

“I felt so alone and unsafe”

The woman wrote, “I felt he is behind me, so I sat beside someone where there was no place left on the platform, and he comes up to me and says, ‘Can I sit here?’ I looked around, and wondered—where? Does he want to sit on my lap now? I just stood up and moved away.”

She described how the man then asked her if she had water, continued to follow her, and made her feel increasingly uneasy despite the crowd around her. “Even when there were so many people, I felt unsafe,” she recalled. Eventually, she pretended to be on a phone call, which made the man leave. Still frightened he might return, she quickly moved to the women’s coach.

“It wasn’t even that major but I felt so alone and unsafe in that moment,” she confessed. “I normally travel alone, reply back, even give warnings—but this time my body just stopped. I’m still feeling restless because of it.

Woman Recounts Chilling Stalker Encounter After Offering Help on Delhi Metro

In a disturbing reminder of the vulnerabilities many women face daily, a recent experience shared by a woman on social media has sparked fresh conversations around public safety, especially for women commuting in metro cities like Delhi. The incident took place on the Delhi Metro—a lifeline for millions of residents, but often a space where women encounter uncomfortable and even unsafe situations.

The woman, whose identity remains anonymous, narrated a chilling encounter she had with a stranger after offering him help during a metro ride. What began as a simple act of kindness quickly spiraled into an ordeal that left her shaken.

According to her detailed post, the woman was commuting on the Delhi Metro when she noticed a young man who appeared to be struggling to find his way. Moved by empathy, she offered to help him with directions and engaged in what she believed to be a polite and brief conversation. However, things took a sinister turn soon after.

The man reportedly began following her from one compartment to another, trying to prolong the interaction under various pretexts. At first, she brushed it off as coincidence. But it quickly became apparent that he was not simply confused or lost—he was stalking her. What deeply unsettled her was when he told her he “wanted to sit on her lap,” a statement that crossed the line from uncomfortable to threatening.

Despite her repeated attempts to distance herself, the stalker continued to hover around her. Feeling endangered, the woman took the wise decision to move towards a more crowded compartment and stayed near a group of women. She reported the incident to the metro staff and security, ensuring that the man’s actions were documented.

The account went viral online, drawing attention to the perils women face, even in well-monitored public spaces. Many users expressed outrage, while others shared their own similar experiences of harassment in public transport.

This incident underscores a persistent issue in urban India: the lack of a safe environment for women in public spaces. Despite the presence of CCTV surveillance, women-only coaches, and increased patrolling by metro staff, incidents of stalking and harassment continue to be reported frequently.

One of the key takeaways from the story is the importance of being alert and trusting one’s instincts. The woman’s decision to move to a safer space and notify authorities was not only brave but critical in potentially preventing a worse outcome. Her willingness to share her experience publicly also helped initiate a larger conversation around consent, personal boundaries, and the need for better public awareness.

While authorities such as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have implemented safety features like emergency helplines, pink coaches, and panic buttons, enforcement often remains weak. There is a growing need for quick response mechanisms and a stronger emphasis on sensitizing staff to handle such complaints promptly and respectfully.

Equally important is the need to educate the public—especially young men—on appropriate behavior, boundaries, and the consequences of violating someone’s personal space. Schools and colleges must include conversations around gender sensitivity and respect from an early age.

Social media continues to be a powerful platform for women to voice their experiences and demand accountability. However, it should not become the only space where such grievances are taken seriously. Authorities must act decisively, and public transport systems must evolve to ensure real-time protection and justice.

This incident serves as a stark reminder that safety in public spaces is not just about physical infrastructure—it’s also about the social mindset. Until women can offer help without fear of being harassed or stalked, the journey toward a safer society remains incomplete.
