Thousands of Muslims took part in Eid-e-Milad processions on Monday across Mumbai to celebrate the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. While Eid-e-Milad was officially observed on Friday, the processions were held two days later due to the ongoing Ganeshotsav festivities, which concluded on Saturday.
This year’s celebrations held special significance, as they marked the 1,500th birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. Streets across several parts of the city witnessed vibrant processions, devotional chants, and displays of unity and faith.
The celebration of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi at Mahim Dargah in Mumbai took place on September 8, with visuals capturing scenes of devotion and enthusiastic community involvement on Monday.
This year, the Muslim community opted to shift the main Eid-e-Milad processions to September 8 in an effort to maintain communal harmony, as Anant Chaturdashi, a significant Hindu festival, was observed on September 6. The adjustment was made to prevent any overlap or disruption between the two major religious events.
To facilitate the smooth observance of both festivals, the Maharashtra government officially rescheduled the public holiday for Eid-e-Milad in Mumbai City and Mumbai Suburban districts from Friday, September 5, to Monday, September 8.
This decision was announced through a notification issued by the Department of General Administration, released on Wednesday. The circular, issued in the name of the Governor of Maharashtra and signed by Deputy Secretary Dilip Deshpande, emphasised that the move was made “in the spirit of brotherhood”, allowing both communities to celebrate peacefully.
Although the public holiday and processions were officially shifted, early celebrations and prayers began earlier at key locations like Mahim Dargah, highlighting Mumbai’s spirit of unity and communal harmony during festive times.
The city of Mumbai witnessed a spectacular celebration as thousands of devotees took part in Eid-e-Milad processions to commemorate Prophet Muhammad’s 1,500th birth anniversary. Streets across the metropolis were decorated with vibrant lights, banners, and religious symbols, creating a festive atmosphere that drew large crowds from diverse communities.
Reports indicate that over 50,000 devotees participated in processions organized across major neighborhoods, including Dhobi Ghat, Byculla, Mohammed Ali Road, and Mazgaon. The processions featured traditional qawwalis, naat recitations, and religious chants, along with floats depicting Islamic history and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.
Authorities ensured smooth traffic management while maintaining security along the procession routes. Volunteers and local organizations coordinated to provide water, medical aid, and crowd management services to the participants.
Eid-e-Milad, also known as Mawlid al-Nabi, is celebrated worldwide to honor the birth of Prophet Muhammad. This year’s celebration holds special significance as it marks the 1,500th anniversary, drawing attention to the enduring legacy of the Prophet’s teachings of peace, compassion, and social justice.
Religious leaders addressed the crowd, emphasizing unity, harmony, and the importance of community service. Several mosques across Mumbai also conducted special prayers and sermons, reinforcing the spiritual essence of the occasion.
Apart from religious observances, the processions were accompanied by cultural performances, including Sufi music, folk dances, and storytelling sessions about the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad. Streets were adorned with illuminated arches and banners highlighting messages of peace and coexistence.
The celebration saw enthusiastic participation from people of all ages, including children, youth, and senior citizens. Local residents and shopkeepers contributed by decorating streets, offering refreshments, and assisting in organizing the processions. Social media platforms were flooded with images and videos, capturing the vibrancy and devotion of the community.
The Mumbai Police and local authorities ensured strict adherence to safety protocols, with deployment of additional personnel, barricades, and medical teams to prevent overcrowding. Officials praised the cooperation of citizens and community organizations for ensuring a peaceful and well-managed celebration.
