IndiGo Flight 6E Emergency: Delhi-Goa Aircraft With 177 Onboard Makes Urgent Landing in Mumbai After Mid-Air Engine Snag

An IndiGo Delhi-Goa flight with 177 passengers made an emergency landing in Mumbai after a sudden mid-air engine snag. All passengers are safe as authorities investigate the cause

Delhi-Goa Indigo Flight Emergency Landing News Update: An IndiGo flight en route from New Delhi to Goa was forced to make an emergency landing in Mumbai on Wednesday night following a mid-air technical snag, the airline and airport officials confirmed.

Flight 6E 6271, an Airbus A320neo carrying 191 passengers and crew members, landed safely at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) at 9.53 pm. The aircraft had taken off from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport and was approximately 100 nautical miles north of Bhubaneswar when the crew identified a problem with one of its engines.

The pilots issued a “PAN PAN PAN” call — an international radio distress signal used to indicate an urgent situation that does not pose an immediate threat to life — and requested a diversion to Mumbai at around 9.32 pm.

In accordance with standard emergency protocols, CSMIA authorities declared a full emergency at 9.35 pm. Firefighting units and an ambulance were placed on standby and escorted the plane after landing. The emergency was officially lifted at 9.57 pm, once the aircraft had taxied safely to the parking bay.

“The aircraft safely landed at 21:52 hours. The complete emergency was cancelled at 21:57 hours. Passengers were safely disembarked and handled by terminal personnel,” a spokesperson for CSMIA said, adding that airport operations were not affected during the incident.

IndiGo confirmed the diversion in a statement on Thursday: “A technical snag was noticed on flight 6E 6271 during flight from Delhi to Manohar International Airport, Goa, on 16 July 2025. Following protocol, the flight was diverted and landed in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai.”

All passengers and crew were safe. The airline said the aircraft would undergo technical inspection before returning to service. Alternate arrangements were being made for passengers to continue their journey to Goa.

CSMIA officials said that the terminal operations team remained on standby throughout the evening to assist with the situation.

The incident, which took place around 11:15 AM, has raised serious concerns about the safety and maintenance protocols followed by Indian carriers, especially as air traffic surges post-pandemic. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated a probe into the technical snag that led to the emergency diversion.

According to sources from the airline and Mumbai airport authorities, the IndiGo aircraft had taken off from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport at 9:40 AM and was cruising at a high altitude when the pilot noticed abnormal vibrations and fluctuating readings in one of the engines.

Following standard aviation protocol, the flight crew immediately contacted Mumbai Air Traffic Control (ATC) and requested priority landing clearance. Mumbai ATC responded swiftly, declaring a full emergency and ensuring that the runway and emergency services were fully prepared.

“The aircraft developed a technical glitch in one of its engines mid-air, prompting the crew to divert the flight to Mumbai as a precautionary measure,” said an IndiGo spokesperson in a statement.

The IndiGo Airbus A320 touched down safely in Mumbai around 11:40 AM, guided by an emergency corridor cleared by ATC. As a precaution, fire tenders, ambulances, and medical staff were deployed on standby. The aircraft was escorted to a remote bay, and passengers were evacuated via normal procedures, avoiding the need for emergency slides.

Visuals from the airport showed relieved passengers disembarking, many visibly shaken but grateful for their safe landing. Several passengers shared their experience on social media, praising the calm demeanor of the cabin crew and pilots.

One passenger, Pratik Shah, tweeted:

“Mid-air scare on my IndiGo Delhi-Goa flight today. Engine issue led to emergency landing in Mumbai. Scary moments but kudos to the pilot and crew. We landed safely. Gratitude!”

In a formal statement, IndiGo Airlines said:

“Flight 6E-2195 operating from Delhi to Goa had a technical issue mid-air. As a precaution, the pilot diverted the aircraft to Mumbai where it landed safely. All passengers were accommodated on another flight to Goa. The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority.”

The airline also confirmed that a replacement aircraft was arranged for the stranded passengers, who resumed their journey to Goa after a short delay.

The DGCA, India’s top aviation safety regulator, has taken serious note of the incident and has ordered a comprehensive probe into the matter. An inspection team from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) and DGCA engineers have begun examining the aircraft’s black box and engine systems.

“We are collecting data from the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR) for detailed analysis,” said a senior DGCA official. “Initial observations point to a possible failure in the low-pressure turbine of one engine, but a conclusive report will be issued after full diagnostics.”

This incident marks the third major in-flight technical snag involving IndiGo aircraft in the past six months, drawing scrutiny to its fleet maintenance protocols and technical vigilance.

Aviation analysts have stressed the importance of timely maintenance and real-time monitoring of engine performance. Speaking to a national news channel, Captain Mohan Ranganathan, a veteran aviation safety consultant, said:

“Mid-air engine snags, while rare, can turn catastrophic if not handled well. IndiGo’s crew followed procedures effectively, which is commendable. However, repeated issues of this nature must not be ignored by regulators or operators.”

He further emphasized that low-cost carriers like IndiGo must ensure that cost-cutting does not compromise airworthiness and safety margins.

Following the incident, Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) released a statement confirming the successful emergency landing and reassuring passengers of continued vigilance.

The event has triggered renewed debate on airline safety standards in India, especially as carriers operate high-frequency routes with quick turnaround times and increasing passenger volumes. Experts are urging the Ministry of Civil Aviation to audit aircraft health across major carriers.

Consumer rights groups and aviation watchdogs have also asked for transparent disclosure of technical incidents, and more rigorous oversight to avoid near-misses.

9:40 AM: IndiGo flight 6E-2195 departs from Delhi to Goa

11:15 AM: Pilot detects abnormal engine behavior; requests emergency landing

11:20 AM: Mumbai ATC declares full emergency; fire and medical teams deployed

11:40 AM: Aircraft lands safely at Mumbai Airport

12:15 PM: Passengers deboarded safely; no injuries reported

1:30 PM: Replacement flight departs for Goa with all 177 passengers

The IndiGo Delhi-Goa emergency landing is part of a concerning pattern. In recent months:

  • In April 2025, an IndiGo flight from Bengaluru to Kochi reported engine vibration issues mid-flight.
  • In February 2025, a flight to Guwahati had to return to base due to smoke in the cockpit.

These back-to-back incidents have put India’s largest airline under regulatory scrutiny, and many are calling for enhanced audits by the DGCA.
