A fire broke out on Monday near a skywalk adjacent to the railway tracks at Thane railway station, sparking panic among commuters in the vicinity. Thick smoke and flames were seen dangerously close to passing trains, prompting immediate attention from the fire brigade and emergency services.

Videos of the incident quickly went viral, showing black smoke billowing from the spot while trains continued to move along the tracks. The fire, which caused a brief scare, was swiftly brought under control, according to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC)

Cooling operations are currently underway to ensure there is no chance of reignition. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported and train services continued to operate without disruption. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation and an investigation is expected to determine the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, on Sunday night, a fire broke out at the N G Royal Park residential tower, a 19-storey building in Kanjurmarg East. The blaze was reported at around 11:40 pm and was confined to the electric duct running from the first to the top floor of the building.

Located near Gandhi Market on R. Deshmukh Marg, the building houses numerous families. Several residents were trapped on various floors and the terrace when the fire erupted. Firefighters from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) acted promptly and safely evacuated all stranded residents via the staircase.

According to a statement from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the fire was limited to electrical wiring and installations within the vertical duct. The incident was declared a Level I (minor) fire and was fully extinguished by 1:24 am.

No casualties or injuries were reported, and the situation was brought under control before it could escalate further. Fire officials are now assessing the building’s safety and checking for any remaining risks.

At around 6:30 PM yesterday, commuters on the suspended pedestrian overbridge adjacent to Thane Station and its railway tracks suddenly smelled burning followed by visible dark smoke. Eyewitnesses report flames were spurting outward from what appeared to be an electrical junction box. Authorities believe an electrical short circuit in the rooftop cabling or power junction feeding mobile towers or station lighting triggered the blaze. While official confirmation is pending, this mirrors a July 2021 incident at Mira Road station, where a skywalk fire was traced to a junction box short circuit

Thane Station is one of the busiest transit hubs in India, handling 260,000+ daily passengers and over 1,000 train movements each day. The evacuation was immediate: commuters, startled by the flames, scrambled off the skywalk and tracks, while station staff halted incoming train services briefly to clear the affected area.

  • Estimated number of people affected: Over 1,000 commuters were displaced or delayed.
  • Rail services disrupted: Suburban and long-distance services faced a 15‑ to 45‑minute delay, especially during evening rush.
  • Casualties: Thankfully, no injuries or casualties have been reported as of now.

Thane Municipal Civil Defence and local fire brigade vehicles arrived swiftly within approximately 3–4 minutes of the alarm. Firefighters doused the flames in what officials describe as “under 10 minutes,” preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby rail infrastructure. Though significant smoke ensued, there was no structural collapse. Investigation by Western Railway engineers confirmed that rail tracks and station property remained intact with no damage to signaling equipment .

“One minute I was on the skywalk heading to catch my local, then smoke and sparks—it was pure chaos,” said a commuter, requesting anonymity.
“Security staff guided us off but you could see panic; trains were backed up, announcements were frantic.”

Videos captured by smartphone users—showing plumes of smoke rising against monsoon skies—quickly became viral, fueling public outrage and forcing railway authorities to provide rapid updates.

Thane Station and its skywalks serve as crucial pedestrian links—some even spanning 600 m+ over creeks or tracks, like the Vitawa–Thane skywalk. These massive structures carry daily foot traffic in the tens of thousands and pose a unique set of risks:

  • High voltage junction boxes and cabling are often exposed.
  • Insufficient preventive maintenance leads to equipment deterioration.
  • Inadequate emergency systems, such as outdated CCTV, lack of accessible firefighting tools, and uninformed commuters.
  • False sense of security—the structures appear safe but can turn hazardous quickly.
