The baby boy, named Matheus Gabriel, was born at the Hospital Sagrado Coracso de Jesus in Neropolis, Goias, the Mirror reported.
His mother, Queidy Araujo de Oliveira, had been using an intrauterine device (IUD), also known as the copper coil, for nearly two years, according to the report. The device is considered to be more than 99 per cent effective at preventing pregnancy.
An IUD is a small, T-shaped device placed inside the womb to prevent conception. It works by releasing copper into the uterus, creating an environment that is hostile to sperm. Depending on the type, it can remain effective for five to ten years.
Queidy learned she was pregnant during a routine examination. As the coil was still in place, doctors explained that removing it could endanger the pregnancy, so it remained inside her womb throughout. Her pregnancy was not without challenges, as she experienced bleeding and partial detachment. Despite these difficulties, her baby was safely delivered.
Soon after the birth, the attending doctor, Natalia Rodrigues, noticed the IUD and placed it in the newborn’s hand.
