The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 24-hour water cut across multiple parts of Mumbai on December 12 and 13, triggering concern among residents who rely on daily water supplies for essential needs. According to officials, the move is part of a major pipeline maintenance and repair drive that aims to stabilise the city’s water distribution system before peak consumption months.

The temporary shutdown will affect water supply in over 30+ residential and commercial localities, including major neighbourhoods in the western, central, and southern parts of the city. With such a large-scale interruption planned, citizens are urged to store enough water and plan their usage effectively.
The BMC stated that the water cut is necessary due to essential repair work on multiple pipelines that contribute to the city’s overall water distribution network. Key reasons include:
Major Pipeline Maintenance
Several aging pipelines supplying water to western suburbs require urgent repair work to prevent leaks, bursts, and unexpected outages in the future.
2Valve Replacement and Upgradation
The BMC will replace old valves and upgrade components that control water distribution in many zones. This ensures smoother operations and pressure balance.
Preventing Larger Disruptions
Temporary cuts are planned to avoid sudden breakdowns during peak summer demand, when uninterrupted water supply becomes critical.
Improving Water Pressure and Quality
Once the repairs are completed, many areas are expected to experience better water pressure and more consistent supply.
The shutdown will impact supply starting from the morning of December 12 and continue until the morning of December 13. While the BMC has released an extensive list, the most notable affected areas include:
Andheri East & West
Juhu
Vile Parle
Goregaon East
Jogeshwari
Khar East
Santacruz
Bandra East
Kurla
Sion
Dharavi localities
Parts of Ghatkopar
Powai zones

Some areas may face low pressure instead of a total cut, depending on their distance from the repair work. Residents have been advised to check the BMC’s official notification for exact ward-wise updates.
