“The BMC has appealed for public understanding while these critical infrastructure works are completed,” the officials said.

Mumbai residents in several parts of the city are set to face a prolonged water supply disruption as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a 99-hour water cut due to ongoing Mumbai Metro Line 7A construction work. The civic body has issued an advisory asking citizens to store adequate water in advance and use it judiciously during the disruption period.

According to officials, the water cut is necessary to facilitate crucial infrastructure work related to Metro 7A, which aims to improve east-west connectivity and integrate the suburban rail network with the metro system. The project is considered a key component of Mumbai’s expanding urban transport framework, but it will temporarily affect water supply operations in certain zones.

The BMC stated that the shutdown is required to carry out essential pipeline modifications and realignment work near Metro 7A construction sites. These pipelines form part of the city’s major water distribution network, and the work cannot be completed without temporarily halting supply. Officials clarified that the extended duration of 99 hours is due to the complexity of the task and safety requirements involved.

Metro Line 7A is an extension of the existing Line 7, connecting Andheri West to the western railway corridor. Once operational, it is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time, and offer seamless interchange options for commuters. However, such large-scale infrastructure projects often necessitate short-term inconveniences for long-term benefits.

While the BMC has not ruled out minor variations depending on ground conditions, water supply disruptions are expected in parts of Andheri West, Jogeshwari West, Goregaon West, Malad West, and nearby areas. Some adjoining pockets may also experience low pressure or intermittent supply during the restoration phase.

Residential societies, commercial establishments, hospitals, and educational institutions in the affected zones have been advised to make alternative arrangements. Tanker services may see increased demand during the disruption period, and residents are encouraged to book supplies in advance if required.

The BMC has urged citizens to store water before the cut begins and to avoid wastage during the restoration phase. Residents are also advised to cooperate with civic authorities and report any leakage or abnormal pressure issues once supply resumes.

The civic body reassured Mumbaikars that water supply would be restored in a phased manner after the completion of the work. However, officials cautioned that it may take additional time for pressure levels to normalize fully across all affected areas.

A 99-hour water cut is expected to significantly impact daily routines, especially in densely populated residential areas. Housing societies are making contingency plans, including rationing water usage and coordinating tanker deliveries. Restaurants, hotels, and small businesses may also face operational challenges during the period.

Despite the inconvenience, urban planners and civic officials emphasize that such disruptions are unavoidable in a city like Mumbai, where underground utilities intersect with major infrastructure projects.

Once completed, Metro 7A is expected to improve connectivity between western suburbs and major transit hubs, offering commuters a faster and more reliable travel option. The project is also aligned with Mumbai’s broader vision of reducing road congestion, cutting carbon emissions, and enhancing public transport efficiency.

Civic authorities have reiterated that while short-term disruptions can be challenging, the long-term gains in mobility and urban development will benefit millions of residents.

  • Store sufficient water in advance
  • Use water sparingly during the cut
  • Stay updated with official BMC announcements
  • Contact local ward offices in case of emergencies

As Mumbai continues its rapid infrastructure expansion, cooperation between authorities and citizens remains essential to ensure smooth execution and minimal inconvenience.
