Mumbai Rain Chaos: 5 Major Disruptions as BMC Issues Alert – Local Trains Delayed, Roads Flooded, Traffic at Standstill

Mumbai reels under heavy rain as BMC issues an official advisory. Discover 5 major disruptions including local train delays, severe traffic jams, and flooded roads across the city

Mumbai will witness generally cloudy skies over the city and suburbs, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in some areas on Sunday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph may accompany the rain, with isolated places potentially seeing extremely heavy showers.

Parts of south Mumbai received more than 100 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

High tides are expected at 2:55 PM (3.24 m) and 3:58 AM the next day (3.43 m), while low tides will occur at 8:50 PM (1.31 m) and 9:38 AM on 29 September (2.45 m). Residents are advised to remain cautious and avoid waterlogged or vulnerable areas.

Local train services of the Central Railway and Western Railway were running with some delays, while buses of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking were plying without any diversion.

The state advisory warned of urban flooding in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. It also highlighted the risk of landslides in ghat regions and flash floods in vulnerable pockets. District administrations have been told to stay alert and ensure precautionary measures are in place.

Authorities have been instructed to monitor rivers round the clock, keep control rooms functional 24 hours, and deploy pumps in waterlogged areas. Repair teams are to be kept ready for power and road damages, while structurally weak buildings must be checked. Officials have also been directed to track water levels in medium-sized dams across Konkan and upper catchment areas.

Public alerts are being circulated through SMS, social media, and local media outlets. Citizens have been advised to avoid flood-prone zones, minimise travel during intense rain, and move to relief centres if necessary. People have also been asked not to take shelter under trees during thunderstorms.

Heavy rainfall pounded Mumbai yet again, throwing daily life into disarray. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a high-level rain advisory as several parts of the city were submerged under water, leading to massive traffic snarls, delayed train services, and waterlogged roads.

Here are the 5 major disruptions Mumbaikars are facing today

The BMC has urged citizens to avoid non-essential travel as intense rainfall continues across Mumbai and surrounding suburbs. The civic body has activated emergency response teams and kept pumps on standby in flood-prone areas. Schools and colleges have been advised to switch to online classes, while disaster response teams remain on high alert.

Mumbai’s lifeline – the suburban train network – has taken a hit. Services on the Central, Western, and Harbour lines were delayed by 15 to 45 minutes, with several trains being short-terminated due to waterlogging on tracks at Sion, Kurla, and Andheri.

Commuters were left stranded on platforms as announcements cited “technical issues due to rain-induced signal failure.”

Key stretches like SV Road, Eastern Express Highway, and Andheri-Kurla Road were submerged in knee-deep water. The Lower Parel and Dadar areas, known for chronic flooding, saw slow-moving traffic and stalled vehicles throughout the morning.

BMC’s pumping stations are working overtime, but heavy downpour outpaced drainage systems in many locations.

Google Maps and traffic updates showed severe congestion across Mumbai, with the average commute time doubling in most areas. Mumbai Police has advised people to use public transport where possible and avoid known choke points.

Highways like Western Express and Eastern Freeway also reported major delays due to low visibility and slippery roads.

At Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, at least 12 flights were delayed and 2 diverted due to low visibility and persistent showers. Passengers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, with orange alerts in effect for Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts. Wind speeds may pick up, accompanied by thunder and lightning in some areas.

Stay indoors unless travel is essential

Avoid flood-prone routes like King’s Circle, Sion, and Milan Subway
