Mumbai Weather Alert: IMD Issues Yellow Warning as 5+ Erratic Rain Spells Expected Thursday
Raigad and Ratnagiri are under an orange alert with very heavy rainfall expected in the region
On Wednesday, the city witnessed light to moderate spells of rain under India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) yellow alert. In the evening, the IMD’s short-range weather forecast predicted intense rain at isolated places.
On Thursday, under IMD’s yellow alert, similar heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places in the city. Meanwhile Raigad and Ratnagiri, under an orange alert, are expected to receive very heavy rainfall.
As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) automatic weather system, the island city recorded 40.67mm of rainfall while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 25.37mm and 23.34 mm respectively from 8am to 8pm on Wednesday.

On June 18, IMD’s Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 331 mm and 317 mm of rainfall respectively, which led to waterlogging, traffic snarls, and widespread disruption
IMD Director Sunil Kamble noted ≈270 mm of rain between 2 AM and 6 AM, causing severe impacts like disrupted train and flight operations, school closures, and municipal emergency mobilization
Heavy rainfall (64.5–115 mm in 24 hrs) could occur at any point today.
Localized flooding and waterlogging are possible.
Traffic, train, and air travel disruptions may happen.
Outdoor activities should be reconsidered or postponed.
The alert especially warns commuters and residents in low-lying zones like Worli, Kurla East, Dadar, and Vidyavihar, where waterlogging has already been reported

Local trains: Central & Harbour lines at Kurla, Bhandup, Wadala, and Mankhurd experienced slow-downs, diversions, and cancellations

Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport: Delays and cancellations ensued as operations struggled under heavy downpour
Road traffic: Areas like Worli, King’s Circle, and Kurla East faced severe waterlogging, causing long gridlocks
Schools & exams: Government institutions shut down; exams rescheduled due to unsafe conditions
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is actively deploying pumps, clearing drains, issuing advisories, and urging residents to rely on official alerts
Konkan Railway has mobilized 672 personnel to patrol tracks, monitor landslide-prone zones, and enforce a monsoon timetable until Oct 31
“IMD is Akshay Kumar – joh main bolta hoon woh main karta hoon; joh main nahi bolta woh main definitely karta hoon.” (IMD is Akshay Kumar – what they say they’ll do, they do; what they don’t, they definitely do)
Despite valid tech limitations in forecasting Mumbai’s microclimate, many actively prepare—carrying umbrellas, waterproof gear, and power banks—especially during Yellow or Orange alerts
Avoid unnecessary travel; rely on real-time updates via IMD notifications and civic dashboards.
Plan outdoor events with alternative indoor options or reschedule.
Protect personal & property assets:
- Use rain covers for vehicles and bags.
- Keep backup clothes, power banks, and torches at home/office
Stay informed: monitor local media, official alerts, and BMC advisories.
Drive carefully: watch for flooded roads and avoid risky routes.
Safeguard pets and outdoor plants from excessive rain.
Monsoon fatigue is unlikely this year. With IMD projecting consistent rainfall through June 25, residents should brace for persistent wet conditions, not just a single day of showers
The situation could elevate to Orange alerts if isolated areas experience heavier-than-expected downpours.
Mumbai is under a Yellow Alert for erratic rainfall and potential flooding on Thursday, June 19, 2025, with disruptions expected to extend into the weekend. Historical data—over 300 mm of rain in 24 hours—highlights the immediate risks. Preparedness is key: stay updated with IMD advisories, expect transport delays, and take personal safety measures.
