Mumbai Weather Today LIVE: IMD Issues Red Alert, Police on High Alert as City Braces for 200+ mm Rainfall

Mumbai weather turns severe as IMD predicts over 200 mm rain today. LIVE updates: Police issue high alert across flood-prone zones. Track road closures, train disruptions, and safety advisories

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Friday issued an ‘orange’ alert for Mumbai, with the city likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. A red alert has been sounded in Raigad and Ratnagiri districts over the next two days. Between Thursday and Friday morning, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 24 mm rain while the Colaba station has recorded 22 mm rainfall. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also issued a four-day alert for high tides in the Arabian Sea, lasting till July 27.

In other news, In the past 24 hours, Mumbai has reported two house collapses in the island city division, along with at least 11 tree fall incidents, six in the western suburbs, three in the island city, and two in the eastern suburbs. Additionally, 10 short circuit cases were recorded between Thursday and Friday morning, with five in the island city and four in the eastern suburbs. Civic officials confirmed that no injuries have been reported in any of the incidents.

Traffic disrupted: Mumbai Traffic Police Friday issued an advisory urging citizens to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, avoid coastal areas, and drive cautiously. It also announced that Andheri Subway is closed for vehicular movement due to severe waterlogging. Traffic is being diverted via the Gokhale Bridge & Thackeray Bridge. “Our officials and staff are on high alert and ready to assist Mumbaikars. In case of any emergency, please dial 100 / 112/103.”

The city of Mumbai is on high alert today as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm in several parts of the city and suburbs. The situation remains tense with the possibility of waterlogging, traffic gridlocks, local train delays, and disruptions to civic services. Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors unless travel is essential, as multiple agencies are now actively coordinating emergency response measures.

According to the IMD, Mumbai is likely to receive more than 200 mm of rainfall in the next 24 hours, with isolated areas expected to witness even heavier downpours. Thunderstorms, gusty winds up to 40-50 km/h, and lightning have also been forecast.

“South Mumbai, Eastern Suburbs, and Western Suburbs may witness intense spells of rain during early morning and late-night hours,” the IMD said. Red alerts imply a take action warning, urging authorities and citizens to be prepared for serious weather-related disruptions.

Mumbai Police, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been put on high alert. The police have issued advisories cautioning citizens to avoid venturing into waterlogged streets, underpasses, and sea-facing promenades.

Key Police Advisory Highlights:

  • Avoid travel unless necessary
  • Stay away from sea-facing areas like Marine Drive, Juhu Beach, and Worli Seaface
  • Do not park vehicles near trees or electric poles
  • Helplines: 100 (Police), 1916 (BMC), 108 (Ambulance)

BMC’s disaster management team is monitoring hotspots like Sion, Kurla, Andheri Subway, Milan Subway, Hindmata, and Chembur, which often report severe flooding.

Local train services on the Central and Western Railway lines have reported minor delays of 10–15 minutes due to water accumulation on tracks between Kurla and Sion. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely to prevent major service halts.

At Mumbai Airport, a few early morning flights were delayed due to low visibility and slippery runways. Airlines have advised passengers to check flight status before leaving for the airport.

Given the intensity of the rainfall, several schools and junior colleges in the city have declared a precautionary holiday today. Many IT firms and private offices have allowed employees to work from home, citing safety and transportation concerns.

Adding to the concern is a high tide of 4.45 metres expected around 1:26 PM, which could worsen flooding if it coincides with peak rainfall. Civic authorities are working to drain low-lying areas before the tide peaks.
