PM Modi Lands in Japan for 2-Day High-Stakes Visit: Key Agendas, 5 Major Meetings, and Strategic Talks

PM Modi arrives in Japan for a crucial 2-day visit with 5 major meetings lined up to boost India-Japan ties, economic cooperation, and strategic security talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo on Friday (August 29, 2025) on a two-day visit during which he will hold summit talks with his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba.

“PM Narendra Modi has landed in Tokyo, Japan. PM will be holding wide-ranging discussions with PM Shigeru Ishiba later in the evening to advance the India-Japan partnership,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a post on X.

In his departure statement, Prime Minister Modi said his visit to Japan will be an opportunity to strengthen civilisational bonds and cultural ties between the two countries.

During his visit to Japan from August 29 to 30, Mr. Modi will hold summit talks with his Japanese PM Ishiba.

“We would focus on shaping the next phase in our Special Strategic and Global Partnership, which has made steady and significant progress over the past 11 years,” Mr. Modi said.

“We would endeavour to give new wings to our collaboration, expand scope and ambition of our economic and investment ties, and advance cooperation in new and emerging technologies, including AI and semiconductors,” he added.

From Japan, Mr. Modi will travel to China on a two-day visit to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1.

“I am confident that my visits to Japan and China would further our national interests and priorities, and contribute to building fruitful cooperation in advancing regional and global peace, security, and sustainable development,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Japan on a crucial two-day official visit, marking yet another important step in strengthening India-Japan relations. The visit is expected to cover a wide range of discussions including economic cooperation, strategic security, technology partnerships, and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

PM Modi’s visit comes at a time when both India and Japan are looking to expand their comprehensive strategic partnership. Over the past decade, the two nations have built strong relations not just in trade but also in areas of defense, infrastructure, digital innovation, and green energy collaboration. Modi’s two-day tour is set to accelerate momentum in these key areas.

According to official sources, PM Modi will hold at least five high-level meetings during his stay in Japan. These include talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, top business leaders, technology giants, and representatives from Japan’s strategic community. The discussions will particularly focus on:

Trade & Investment: Increasing Japanese investments in India’s manufacturing, infrastructure, and startup ecosystem.

Technology Cooperation: Strengthening ties in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation projects.

Green Energy Transition: Expanding cooperation in renewable energy, hydrogen technology, and clean mobility.

Defense & Security: Enhancing maritime security collaboration and joint military exercises in the Indo-Pacific.

Regional Stability: Addressing challenges posed by China’s assertive policies in the region and promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.

India and Japan are both members of the Quad grouping alongside the United States and Australia. Given the geopolitical developments in the region, Modi’s discussions in Tokyo will be closely watched for signals on Indo-Pacific strategy, countering regional threats, and balancing economic resilience.

Japan is already one of the largest investors in India, with contributions in projects such as the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor, metro systems, and industrial corridors. Strengthening these ties further could open new opportunities for infrastructure modernization and technological growth in India.

A major highlight of Modi’s trip will be his interaction with Japan’s top CEOs and industrial leaders. India is seeking greater collaboration in electronics manufacturing, supply chain resilience, fintech, and climate innovation. The visit is expected to pave the way for new agreements, which may significantly enhance India’s role in global value chains.

Beyond politics and economics, Modi’s trip will also focus on cultural exchanges and academic partnerships. India and Japan share a strong bond rooted in history, Buddhism, and shared democratic values. Strengthening people-to-people ties, student exchanges, and tourism initiatives will also be part of the agenda.
