Satara (Maharashtra): In a shocking incident on Monday afternoon, an 18-year-old youth threatened a minor girl at knifepoint in a residential area of Satara city. The girl, a Class 10 student, was held by the youth with a knife to her throat in broad daylight. Timely intervention by alert citizens and police personnel averted a potential tragedy and led to the girl’s safe rescue.
The incident, caught on camera, unfolded around 4 pm when the girl was returning home from school. According to preliminary reports, the accused and the girl live in the same locality. The youth, who is said to be a jilted lover, accosted the girl and held a knife to her neck. Onlookers quickly gathered at the scene and one of them contacted constable Sagar Nikam from the City Police Station’s intelligence wing, reported Marathi news portal ESakal.
Upon receiving the alert, Nikam and constable Dheeraj More rushed to the location and found the youth threatening the girl with a knife. For over ten minutes, both officers and locals attempted to persuade the boy to release the girl and drop the weapon. However, he refused to relent.
Displaying presence of mind and coordination, one officer engaged the boy from the front, distracting him, while another approached stealthily from behind. At the right moment, the officer seized the youth’s hand holding the knife, allowing them to swiftly pull the girl to safety.
Once the girl was freed, the enraged crowd turned on the attacker and assaulted him. Police had a tough time shielding him from the mob. Eventually, they managed to extract the boy and escorted him to the Shahupuri Police Station.
Inspector Sachin Mhetre was informed of the incident and both the accused and the girl were taken to the district hospital for a medical examination. Later in the evening, the process of registering a formal complaint was conducted at Shahupuri Police Station.
Initial information suggests the motive behind the attack is the girl’s rejection of the youth, though officials confirmed that both the accused and the victim reside in the same neighbourhood. Further investigation is ongoing.

Enraged and emotionally disturbed, the man pulled out a sharp-edged knife and held it to her neck while yelling threats.
Eyewitnesses claimed the man was shouting, demanding the girl speak to him or agree to rekindle the relationship. The girl, visibly petrified, stood frozen while the public initially watched in disbelief.
CCTV footage from a nearby shop and mobile phone videos taken by onlookers have since flooded social media, showing the assailant gripping the girl’s neck tightly with one arm while brandishing the knife with the other. His erratic behavior lasted several minutes, during which no one dared intervene directly due to fear of triggering violence.
In one particularly disturbing clip, the girl is seen crying and pleading as the man tightens his grip. The footage captures the sheer horror and helplessness of the moment.
Soon after the incident was reported, a patrolling police unit reached the location. Officers approached the suspect cautiously, trying to de-escalate the situation. After a tense few minutes of negotiation, the man was distracted and overpowered by police personnel, who managed to wrest the knife from his hand and rescue the girl.
The girl was taken to a local hospital for a medical check-up and is currently under trauma counselling, officials confirmed.
Satara Superintendent of Police (SP) Ajit Patil told the media, “The accused has been arrested under sections of the Indian Penal Code related to attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. We are ensuring the girl receives full psychological and legal support.”
Preliminary investigation suggests that the accused had been harassing the girl for several months following the end of their relationship. Family members of the girl claim that he had been stalking her outside her college and threatening self-harm if she refused to communicate with him.
The police are also probing if any previous complaints were made against the accused and whether there was a lapse in addressing them.
The incident has sparked widespread anger on social media, with citizens demanding stricter implementation of anti-stalking laws. The hashtag #SataraShocker began trending on Twitter/X shortly after the video surfaced.
Prominent political leaders, including Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare, condemned the act and assured swift justice. “This is unacceptable. We will ensure the harshest punishment under POCSO and related laws,” she tweeted.
This incident comes amidst growing reports of gender-based violence in Maharashtra and across India. Experts warn that emotional obsession and toxic masculinity often fuel such acts when relationships end, especially involving minors.
Women’s rights activist Renuka Deshmukh noted, “Such attacks reflect a mindset of entitlement. The system must take threats seriously before they escalate to public terror.”
