Sonia Gandhi Hospitalised at Ganga Ram: Condition Stable, Doctors Issue Health Update in 24 Hours

According to sources, Ms. Sonia Gandhi condition is stable; hospital sources say she is suffering from chronic cough, likely aggravated due to pollution in Delhi

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has been admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi after she suffered respiratory discomfort, sources said on Tuesday (January 6, 2026).

At present, she is doing fine, and her condition is “absolutely stable”, they said.

It is a routine admission, but she has this problem of chronic cough, and she keeps coming for check-ups, especially with this pollution in the city, a hospital source told PTI, adding that she was admitted on Monday (January 5) evening.

She had complained of some respiratory discomfort, and upon medical examination, it was found that “her bronchial asthma had been mildly exacerbated” due to the combined effects of cold weather and pollution, the source said.

As a precautionary measure, she was admitted for further observation and treatment. The decision regarding her discharge will be taken by the treating physicians based on her clinical progress and is likely in a day or two, the source added.

Senior Congress leader and former party president Sonia Gandhi has been admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, prompting concern among party workers and supporters across the country. Hospital authorities have confirmed that her condition is stable, and she is under close medical supervision. The news of her hospitalisation quickly spread, leading to an outpouring of wishes from political leaders across party lines.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Sonia Gandhi was admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital after experiencing health-related discomfort. Doctors conducted a series of routine and precautionary medical tests following her admission. The hospital later issued a brief update confirming that her condition remains stable and that there is no immediate cause for alarm.

Medical experts at the hospital are monitoring her health parameters and have advised rest. While no detailed medical bulletin has been released so far, sources indicate that the admission was largely preventive in nature, a step often taken given her age and medical history.

The Congress party acknowledged Sonia Gandhi’s hospitalisation and reassured supporters that she is receiving the best possible medical care. Senior party leaders urged party workers to remain calm and expressed confidence in her recovery.

“Sonia Gandhi ji is stable and under expert care. Doctors are monitoring her condition closely. We request everyone to keep her in their prayers,” a senior Congress leader said.

Several Congress leaders postponed public engagements as a mark of concern and solidarity. Messages wishing her a speedy recovery were shared across social media platforms by party members and supporters.

The news of Sonia Gandhi’s hospitalisation triggered reactions from across the political spectrum. Leaders from both the ruling alliance and opposition parties extended wishes for her speedy recovery, reflecting the respect she commands as one of India’s most influential political figures.

Several leaders described her as a towering personality in Indian politics and expressed hope that she would return to active public life soon. The gestures underscored a rare moment of bipartisan goodwill in an otherwise polarised political environment.

Sonia Gandhi has played a pivotal role in shaping modern Indian politics. After entering public life in the late 1990s, she went on to lead the Congress party during some of its most defining moments. Under her leadership, the party returned to power at the Centre in 2004 and again in 2009.

She served as the chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and was instrumental in pushing several landmark welfare legislations, including the Right to Information Act, MGNREGA, and the Food Security Act. Her decision to decline the prime ministership in 2004 remains one of the most talked-about moments in Indian political history.

Even after stepping down as Congress president, Sonia Gandhi has continued to be a key guiding force within the party, often acting as a bridge between generations of leadership.

This is not the first time Sonia Gandhi has been hospitalised. Over the years, she has undergone medical treatment both in India and abroad for various health-related issues. Given her age and past medical history, doctors have often recommended periodic medical evaluations.

In previous instances, Congress leaders have maintained that such hospital visits were precautionary and part of routine health management. Her current hospitalisation is also being viewed in a similar light by party insiders.

Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is one of Delhi’s most reputed private healthcare institutions, known for treating several high-profile political leaders, bureaucrats, and public figures. The hospital is equipped with advanced medical facilities and specialised departments, making it a preferred choice for complex and preventive care.

Sources said Sonia Gandhi is under the supervision of a team of senior doctors, and all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure her comfort and privacy.

Sonia Gandhi’s admission comes at a time when the Congress party is navigating multiple political challenges, including electoral preparations and organisational restructuring. While she has reduced her public appearances in recent years, her guidance remains crucial, especially during key political decisions.

Party insiders said there is no immediate impact on ongoing political activities, as Sonia Gandhi was not scheduled for any major public engagements in the coming days. However, senior leaders are said to be in regular touch with the family and doctors to stay updated on her health.

Soon after the news broke, social media platforms were flooded with messages wishing Sonia Gandhi a speedy recovery. Supporters shared posts recalling her political journey and contributions to the country, while hashtags related to her health began trending.

Many users expressed hope that she would soon be discharged and return home. The overall tone of public reaction has been largely sympathetic, reflecting her long-standing presence in national politics.

Sources indicated that members of the Gandhi family are present in Delhi and are closely coordinating with the medical team. Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are said to be in constant touch with doctors, ensuring that all medical advice is followed.

The family has requested privacy during this period and has thanked well-wishers for their concern and prayers.

While a detailed medical bulletin is awaited, doctors have emphasised that Sonia Gandhi’s condition is stable and under control. Health experts note that hospitalisation for observation is common for senior citizens, especially when symptoms need closer evaluation.

“Stability is a positive sign. Continuous monitoring allows doctors to rule out complications and ensure timely intervention if needed,” a senior physician explained.

At present, there is no official word on when Sonia Gandhi will be discharged. Doctors are likely to make that decision after reviewing test results and assessing her overall condition over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Congress leaders have indicated that updates will be shared as and when doctors issue formal statements.

Sonia Gandhi’s hospitalisation has once again drawn attention to the human side of political leaders who often operate under intense public scrutiny. Despite political differences, moments like these tend to soften divides and remind the public of shared concerns beyond politics.

For many Congress workers, Sonia Gandhi remains a symbol of resilience and dedication, and news of her stable condition has brought relief.
