Telangana Tragedy 2025: 20 Dead, Dozens Injured in Horrific Tipper Lorry–RTC Bus Collision at Chevella
A tragic road accident in Telangana’s Chevella left 20 people dead after a high-speed tipper lorry collided with an RTC bus on Monday
A devastating road accident in Telangana’s Chevella region has left the state in mourning after a tipper lorry collided head-on with an RTC bus, killing at least 20 people and injuring several others early on Monday morning. The accident, which occurred near Yenkepally village in Chevella mandal, is being described as one of the deadliest road tragedies in Telangana in recent years.
According to initial police reports, the collision occurred around 7:30 AM when a speeding tipper lorry loaded with sand rammed into a state-run TSRTC bus traveling towards Hyderabad. The impact of the crash was so severe that both vehicles were mangled beyond recognition, trapping dozens of passengers inside the bus.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the lorry was traveling at an unusually high speed and appeared to have lost control on a curve near Yenkepally. Within seconds, it crossed into the opposite lane and crashed headlong into the RTC bus. The sound of the collision echoed through nearby houses, drawing villagers to the spot.
“The lorry hit the bus with such force that we heard a thunder-like noise,” said one eyewitness. “By the time we reached the site, passengers were screaming for help, and the front portion of the bus was completely crushed.”
Locals immediately alerted the police and emergency services, who rushed to the site along with rescue teams and fire personnel. Despite the swift response, many passengers were trapped inside the bus for over half an hour before being pulled out using hydraulic cutters and metal tools.
Authorities have confirmed that 20 people, including the RTC bus driver and several passengers, lost their lives in the accident. Around 25 others sustained injuries, some of whom are in critical condition. The injured were immediately shifted to Osmania General Hospital and Chevella Government Hospital for emergency treatment.

Police officials said that the driver of the lorry was among those killed in the crash, and the impact was so powerful that several victims died instantly. Some bodies were reportedly unrecognizable due to the severity of the collision.
Telangana Police, fire services, and local administration teams coordinated large-scale rescue efforts soon after the crash. Excavators and cutting machines were used to clear the wreckage, while medical teams provided first aid to survivors.
District Collector Anitha Ramachandran visited the spot and supervised the rescue efforts. She confirmed that postmortems are being conducted and that the state government will provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased.
The RTC management has also expressed deep sorrow and stated that they are fully cooperating with the investigation. Officials from the Transport Department have been directed to inspect the crash site to determine whether overloading or brake failure caused the collision.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the families of the victims. In a statement released on Monday afternoon, the Chief Minister called the accident “a heart-wrenching tragedy” and instructed officials to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the injured.
The Chief Minister’s Office announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh each to the families of those killed in the crash. He also ordered the Transport Department to submit a detailed report on the incident and to take strict measures to prevent such accidents in the future.

Several eyewitnesses who rushed to the scene described the horrific aftermath. “There were bodies lying on the road. The bus was torn open in the front, and the lorry’s cabin was completely smashed,” said a local shopkeeper. “People were crying, searching for their relatives amid the chaos.”
Another survivor, who managed to escape with minor injuries, said the bus had just started its journey from Vikarabad and was en route to Hyderabad. “Everything happened within seconds. I was sitting near the middle of the bus. Suddenly, we heard a loud bang, and people were thrown out of their seats,” he said, recounting the traumatic moment.
The Chevella–Vikarabad route has long been known for its narrow roads and sharp turns, making it a frequent accident-prone stretch. Locals have repeatedly demanded widening of the road and installation of speed-control measures such as rumble strips and warning signboards.
Data from the Telangana Transport Department reveals that over 350 people have died in road accidents across Ranga Reddy district in the past year, many of them due to overspeeding or heavy vehicle collisions.
Following Monday’s incident, officials have promised to revisit road safety plans in the region. “We will conduct a thorough safety audit of this stretch. Accidents like this cannot continue to happen,” said a senior transport officer.
The Chevella police have registered a case under Sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code. Initial reports suggest that negligent driving and possible brake failure could be behind the tragedy.
Forensic teams have been deployed to inspect both vehicles, while the Regional Transport Office (RTO) has been asked to verify whether the lorry was overloaded or operating without valid permits.
Senior police officials have urged drivers to adhere to speed limits and avoid reckless driving, especially on rural and hilly stretches.
The horrific images from the crash site have triggered massive outrage on social media, with citizens and activists demanding stricter enforcement of road safety laws. Hashtags like #ChevellaAccident, #TelanganaTragedy, and #RoadSafetyNow began trending soon after the news broke.
Many users called for mandatory GPS-based speed monitoring for heavy vehicles, citing repeated instances of overspeeding tipper lorries on rural roads. “Every few months we hear of such deadly accidents. It’s time for real accountability,” wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user.
Experts believe that the accident highlights a larger systemic failure in enforcing safety norms for heavy vehicles in India.
“Tipper lorries are among the most dangerous vehicles on highways when not monitored. Overloading, poor maintenance, and driver fatigue are common factors,” said traffic safety consultant Dr. B. Ramesh.
He emphasized that Telangana’s rapid urban expansion has led to increased movement of construction vehicles on narrow rural roads, posing serious dangers to public transport. “Unless strong regulations and regular vehicle checks are implemented, tragedies like Chevella will continue to occur,” he warned.
India records over 1.5 lakh road fatalities every year, according to Ministry of Road Transport data. Telangana alone reported over 7,000 accidents in 2024, claiming nearly 6,000 lives. Overspeeding and human error account for more than 70% of these deaths.
The Chevella accident adds to a long list of recent road tragedies across India, sparking renewed debate over road design, vehicle fitness, and driver accountability.
As rescue operations wind down and families prepare to bid farewell to their loved ones, Monday’s Chevella accident stands as a grim reminder of the urgent need for stronger road safety enforcement in India.
From inadequate infrastructure to reckless driving, the causes are many—but the outcome remains tragically the same: innocent lives lost on the road.
The Telangana government has promised a detailed investigation, but for grieving families, justice will mean little without lasting change. For now, the state mourns the 20 precious lives lost in one of its worst-ever road disasters, hoping that this tragedy becomes a turning point for safer roads ahead.
