Tragedy in NYC: 1 Officer Killed in Manhattan Shooting – Bangladeshi Immigrant Hero Leaves Behind Pregnant Wife

A Bangladeshi immigrant NYPD officer was tragically shot and killed in Manhattan. He is survived by his pregnant wife, leaving behind a heart-wrenching story of sacrifice and service

The New York police officer killed in a mass shooting in a Manhattan skyscraper on Monday (July 28, 2025) was described by the city’s mayor and police commissioner as a heroic Bangladeshi immigrant who saved lives while “putting his life on the line.”

New York City, July 29, 2025
A wave of grief and disbelief has swept across New York City and the Bangladeshi-American community following the tragic death of a young police officer killed in the line of duty during a violent shootout in Manhattan. The fallen officer, identified as Officer Mohammad Faisal Rahman, was a 29-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant and a rising member of the NYPD. He was fatally shot late Monday night while responding to an armed robbery in the Lower East Side.

Officer Rahman’s death marks yet another grim reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers across the United States, and his story has struck an especially poignant chord — not only because of his immigrant background and inspiring journey, but also because he leaves behind a pregnant wife, who is expecting their first child in just a few weeks.

According to official NYPD reports, the incident took place shortly before 11:30 PM on July 28 at the intersection of Delancey Street and Norfolk Street, a bustling corner in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Officer Rahman and his partner were responding to a 911 call about an armed robbery at a convenience store when they encountered two suspects attempting to flee the scene.

As the officers pursued the suspects on foot, one of the assailants opened fire, striking Officer Rahman in the upper chest, just above his bulletproof vest. His partner returned fire, wounding one of the suspects, who was taken into custody. The second suspect fled and is currently the subject of an ongoing manhunt.

Despite being rushed to Bellevue Hospital, Officer Rahman succumbed to his injuries just after midnight. The news of his death sent shockwaves through the department and the community he served.

Officer Rahman’s story was one of perseverance, service, and the pursuit of the American dream. He immigrated to the United States from Sylhet, Bangladesh in 2015, after receiving a student visa. Determined to build a better life, he worked multiple jobs while attending community college, eventually graduating with a degree in criminal justice.

In 2020, he joined the NYPD and quickly became known among his peers as a disciplined, compassionate, and hardworking officer. His colleagues remember him as someone who never hesitated to help — a man deeply committed to his adopted homeland and the safety of its people.

“Officer Rahman represented the very best of what this city stands for — courage, resilience, and selfless service,” said NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban in a press briefing. “He was living proof that America remains a beacon for those who come here in search of purpose and belonging.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking aspect of this tragedy is that Officer Rahman leaves behind a 27-year-old wife, Ayesha, who is eight months pregnant with their first child. Friends close to the family said the couple had been eagerly preparing for the arrival of their baby, decorating a small nursery in their Queens apartment just last week.

“She was excited to become a mother,” said Imran Hossain, a family friend. “Now she has to raise their child alone, without the man she loved so deeply. It’s an unimaginable loss.”

Grief counselors and NYPD support officers have been assigned to Ayesha to assist her in the days ahead. The department has also pledged to provide full benefits to Rahman’s widow, including financial support, health coverage, and child welfare assistance.

As word of Officer Rahman’s death spread, dozens of impromptu vigils sprang up across the city, particularly in neighborhoods with large Bangladeshi-American populations such as Jackson Heights, Astoria, and Brooklyn’s Kensington area. Hundreds gathered outside the 96th Precinct Station, where Rahman was stationed, to pay their respects.

“Officer Rahman was not just a cop, he was one of us,” said Shamima Akhter, president of the Bangladeshi American Police Association (BAPA). “His story inspired a generation of immigrant youth to believe that they too could serve and protect this country. We are devastated beyond words.”

A memorial fund has been established to support Ayesha and the unborn child, and within 24 hours of its launch, it had already raised over $150,000 from donors nationwide.

Mayor Eric Adams, a former police officer himself, visited Bellevue Hospital in the early hours after Rahman’s passing and issued a strong statement condemning the violence.

“This city will never forget the sacrifice of Officer Rahman,” Mayor Adams said. “He died a hero, standing in the line of duty to protect his fellow New Yorkers. To those who think they can destroy the fabric of our communities with a gun — know this: we will hunt you down, and we will bring you to justice.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also offered condolences to the family and reiterated her commitment to curbing gun violence in the state. “We must ensure that those who take up arms against our protectors face the full weight of the law,” she said.

As of Tuesday morning, the NYPD confirmed that one suspect, identified as Jalen Brooks, 23, with a criminal history of armed robbery, is in custody and is cooperating with authorities. The second shooter, believed to be the one who fired the fatal shot at Officer Rahman, is still at large.

The department has released surveillance images and is urging the public to assist in locating the fugitive. A $50,000 reward has been announced for any information leading to his arrest.

Officer Mohammad Faisal Rahman’s name will now be inscribed on the NYPD Memorial Wall, a grim honor reserved for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. His colleagues will carry his legacy forward, and his story will be remembered as a testament to the enduring spirit of those who give their lives for the safety of others.

In the coming weeks, the city is expected to hold a full honors funeral for Rahman, with attendance from dignitaries, community leaders, and police departments across the country. The Bangladeshi government has also expressed condolences, with the Consulate General in New York issuing a statement lauding Rahman’s heroism and offering assistance to his family.
