Trump Slaps 25% Tariffs on Pharmaceuticals, Heavy Trucks & Kitchen Cabinets Starting October 1, 2025

Starting October 1, 2025, Trump will impose new tariffs—25% on pharmaceuticals, 30% on heavy trucks, and 35% on kitchen cabinets

United States President Donald Trump Friday announced a new round of punishing tariffs, saying the US will impose 100% duties on imported branded drugs, 25% tariffs on heavy-duty trucks, and 50% tariffs on kitchen cabinets starting October 1.

“Starting October 1st, 2025, we will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any branded or patented Pharmaceutical Product, unless a Company IS BUILDING their Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plant in America,” the US President said in a post on Truth Social. The new 100% tariff on any branded or patented pharmaceutical product will apply to all imports unless the company has already broken ground on building a manufacturing plant in the United States, Trump said.

The US President said he also would start charging a 50% tariff on bathroom vanities and a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture the following week, with all the new duties to take effect on October 1.

He further said that the new heavy-duty truck tariffs were to protect manufacturers from “unfair outside competition” and said the move would benefit companies such as Paccar-owned Peterbilt and Kenworth and Daimler Truck-owned Freightliner.

The new tariffs on kitchen, bathroom and some furniture were because of huge levels of imports which were hurting local manufacturers, Trump said. “The reason for this is the large-scale ‘FLOODING’ of these products into the United States by other outside Countries,” he wrote on Truth Social.

Trump has launched numerous national security probes into potential new tariffs on a wide variety of products during his second term, casting a shadow over the global economic outlook and paralysing business decision-making.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America opposed new drug tariffs, saying earlier this year that 53% by value of the $85.6 billion in ingredients used in medicines consumed in the United States was manufactured in the United States with the remainder from Europe and other US allies.

The US Chamber of Commerce urged the department not to impose new truck tariffs, noting the top five import sources are Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Finland “all of which are allies or close partners of the United States, posing no threat to US national security.”

In a bold move that could reshape U.S. trade policy and impact several major industries, former President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs targeting imports of pharmaceuticals, heavy trucks, and kitchen cabinets, effective October 1, 2025.

Speaking at a campaign-style rally in Ohio, Trump stated that these tariffs are part of a broader plan to boost American manufacturing, protect domestic jobs, and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers.

“For too long, we’ve allowed other countries to flood our markets with cheap goods while killing American industries. That ends now,” Trump said.

The announcement has sparked immediate reactions from business leaders and economists. The pharmaceutical industry, which relies heavily on global supply chains, could see significant cost increases, potentially affecting drug prices and availability.

The automotive and trucking sectors, already grappling with inflation and supply chain issues, are expected to pass costs on to consumers. The home improvement and construction industries may also be hit hard, with kitchen cabinet tariffs raising material costs for contractors and developers.

Several countries affected by the tariffs, including China and Germany, have hinted at potential retaliatory measures, which could escalate trade tensions heading into 2026.

American consumers may feel the impact of these tariffs in the form of higher prices for medications, vehicles, and home renovation products. However, supporters argue the move will drive long-term benefits by revitalizing domestic manufacturing and creating jobs.

As the new tariffs are set to take effect on October 1, 2025, businesses are bracing for change while policymakers and analysts debate the broader economic implications.
