Uttar Pradesh ATS Arrests Man in Moradabad for Alleged Spying for Pakistan’s ISI
The Uttar Pradesh Police’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) Sunday arrested a man for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency and smuggling goods across the border.
The police said they got a tip that a man working on the India-Pakistan border was smuggling goods with backing from a Pakistani agency. The informer said he was also spying for Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence ISI and was involved in anti-national activities.
According to the police, following the tip-off, they tracked the man, and identified him as Shehzad from the Tanda area in the state’s Rampur district. “The police arrested Shehzad from Moradabad on Sunday,” ATS said in a statement.
The police said they learnt during their probe that Shehzad secretly travelled between India and Pakistan for years, bringing cosmetics, clothes, spices, and other items across the border illegally. He used these trips to work for ISI, stayed in regular touch with their agents, and shared secret information about India’s security, according to the police.
The police said that during further investigation, they found that Shehzad allegedly gave money to agents living in India on orders from Pakistan’s ISI. He is also allegedly involved in recruiting people from Rampur and other parts of Uttar Pradesh, sending them to Pakistan by pretending it was for smuggling so they could work for ISI.
The police said ISI agents handled their visas and travel papers, and also claimed that Shehzad even gave Indian SIM cards to ISI operatives to help them spy on India.
