Woman Alleges Rape Inside Boys’ Hostel — 1 Student Arrested in 24 Hours

The alleged incident took place on Friday after the woman was given pizza and water that was spiked with drugs, she told the police

A second-year student at IIM-Calcutta, a prestigious postgraduate management institution in the city, was arrested on Friday for allegedly raping a woman inside the boys’ hostel, police officials said on Saturday. The incident comes on the heels of an alleged gang rape at a law college in the city last month.

The police identified the accused as Parmanand Toppaunwar, a student who hails from Karnataka, and said that he will be produced at the Alipore court later on Saturday.

According to police officials, the accused had called the woman, a student from another institute, to the institution’s campus for a counselling session. She alleged that when she arrived, he met her at the gate and asked her not to enter her name in the visitors’ register. This raised some doubts in her mind, but she ignored them, she is learnt to have told the police. Saying that he had some work in the boys’ hostel, the accused allegedly took the woman there instead of the counselling venue, police officials claimed.

The woman further alleged that she was offered pizza and water, which she claimed was spiked with drugs. She told the police that she fell unconscious and was raped, police officials said.

The woman claimed that after she regained consciousness, she escaped from the hostel room and informed a friend about the incident. Together, they approached the police, and an FIR was lodged at the jurisdictional police station under sections 64 (punishment for rape) and 123 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc.) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The police suspect the involvement of four more individuals and have detained them for further questioning. While the security guard has been questioned, police sources said that they will be questioning the hostel superintendent and will check the CCTV footage.

The police have cordoned off the hostel room and collected forensic samples from the scene. Additional police force has been called in to increase security outside the institute.

On July 11, 2025, shocking allegations emerged from the Joka campus of IIM-Calcutta when a woman claimed she was lured, drugged, and raped inside the boys’ hostel by a second-year management student. The accused was arrested within 24 hours, sparking outrage over campus safety and institutional lapses.

The woman—unaffiliated with IIM-C but known to the accused—was invited to campus under the pretext of a counselling session. She met him at the gate, where he allegedly asked her not to sign the visitors’ register, arousing suspicion.

He led her to the boys’ hostel instead, saying he needed to fetch something. Inside, he served her pizza and a drink allegedly spiked with sedatives, after which she fell unconscious.

She woke up inside a hostel room and alleges she was raped while semi-conscious. Resisting triggered violent aggression: she claims he grabbed her neck, slammed her head, and threatened her if she reported it.

Regaining composure, she escaped, informed a friend, and filed a First Information Report at Haridevpur Police Station under sections 64 (rape) and 123 (poisoning) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Parmanand Toppaunwar, a second-year IIM-C student, was arrested the same night, and the accused hostel room sealed for forensic evidence.

Police are investigating four others, including the hostel superintendent and guard. CCTV footage is being reviewed.

The key question: How did an outsider enter the boys’ hostel without logging in? Records show no visitor entry, raising concerns over campus security protocols.

This incident occurred just two weeks after a major gang rape at South Calcutta Law College—intensifying public demands for urgent reforms.

IIM-Calcutta’s anti-sexual harassment policy asserts a zero-tolerance stance and mandates internal investigation by an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) within three months. Penalties include expulsion and hostel relocation. However, visitor guardrails appear grossly breached.

The BJP in West Bengal accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of presiding over a state where “predators roam free,” declaring the state a “rape capital.”

Civil society, media, and student groups have called for stringent, time-bound campus reforms—particularly in visitor registration, CCTV access, and hostel oversight.

Evidence Collection: Hostel room sealed; forensic and toxicology samples being processed. CCTV under review.

Witness Interrogation: Staff, students, and security personnel are being questioned to assess negligence or conspiracy.

Child Protection Inquiry: The Calcutta High Court is scrutinizing how outsiders access college premises—recently ordering all student union rooms to be locked without permission.

Institutional Accountability: IIM-C administration is cooperating with police—no public statement yet—while ICC policies may now be re-examined and strengthened.
