Bengaluru woman caught stealing ₹90,000 worth of sarees beaten by shopkeeper — shocking incident caught on CCTV, video goes viral

A shocking incident on Bengaluru’s Avenue Road has gone viral after a shopkeeper and his assistant were seen assaulting a woman in broad daylight over the alleged theft of sarees worth ₹90,000.

The assault, captured on the shop’s CCTV and by bystanders on their phones, has sparked widespread attention on social media.

According to police, the woman, identified as Humpamma, first visited the shop and stole a bundle of sarees. She managed to escape, but the act was clearly recorded on CCTV. The footage shows her standing inside the shop, attempting to take the sarees, and then leaving with the packed bundle,

The woman reportedly returned later to steal more sarees. This time, the shopkeeper recognized her and caught her red-handed, the report further added. In a fit of anger, he dragged her onto the road and repeatedly slapped and kicked her before handing her over to the police. Several locals recorded the assault on their phones, adding to the video’s virality.

Police have filed two separate cases: one against the woman for theft and another against the shopkeeper and his assistant for assault. All three have been arrested and sent to judicial custody. Authorities are investigating the incident further and reviewing the viral footage.

The incident has ignited debate over self-defense versus vigilantism, with social media users criticizing the shopkeeper’s actions while acknowledging the alleged theft.

A shocking incident has surfaced from Bengaluru where a woman was caught red-handed stealing sarees worth ₹90,000 from a local boutique. The situation escalated violently when the shopkeeper physically assaulted the woman, and the entire episode was captured on CCTV, quickly going viral on social media platforms.

According to reports, the woman entered a popular saree shop located in Chickpet, one of Bengaluru’s busiest textile markets, pretending to be a regular customer. After browsing the collection for some time, she allegedly stuffed more than 10 high-end sarees into her bag, attempting to walk out unnoticed.

However, her suspicious behavior was caught on the store’s CCTV system. Acting swiftly, the shopkeeper confronted her at the exit, leading to a heated argument that soon turned physical. In the video, which has now gone viral, the shopkeeper is seen dragging and slapping the woman as others in the store look on.

Following the viral video, the Bengaluru City Police have launched an investigation. According to an official statement:

“Both parties have been called in for questioning. Theft is a serious offense, but so is physical assault. Legal action will be taken based on the evidence.”

Sources indicate that the shopkeeper could face charges under Section 323 IPC (voluntarily causing hurt), while the woman may be booked under Section 379 IPC (theft).

Locals in the area have expressed shock over the incident. A nearby shop owner said:

“Theft cases have been rising, especially during the festival season. But beating someone publicly is not acceptable either.”

Online, the incident has triggered debates on rising shoplifting incidents in Indian metros and how business owners are reacting out of frustration.

This incident is a stark reminder of the growing challenges faced by small business owners, and the urgent need for both better security measures and legal awareness. While stealing is a punishable offense, vigilantism and violence can never be justified.

The CCTV footage of the incident has been widely circulated on social media, with hashtags like #BengaluruTheft, #SareeScandal, and #CaughtOnCamera trending across platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook.

The video has sparked mixed reactions online — while many netizens condemned the attempted theft, others criticized the shopkeeper for taking the law into his own hands and resorting to violence.
