Indian Man Shoots Wife in US: 4 Dead, Children Hide in Closet in 1 Horrifying Family Tragedy

An Indian man allegedly shoots his wife and three relatives in the US, leaving 4 dead as children hid in a closet

An Indian man has been arrested in the US after he shot his wife and their three relatives dead inside a home. The police said the matter was related to a domestic dispute and the shooter has been identified as 51-year-old Vijay Kumar. Investigators further said that at the time of the shooting, three children, including Kumar’s 12-year-old child, hid in a closet and survived the tragedy.

The Indian Mission in Atlanta said that all possible assistance is being extended to the bereaved family. “We are deeply grieved by a tragic shooting incident linked to an alleged family dispute in which an Indian national was among the victims. The alleged shooter has been arrested, and all possible assistance is being extended to the bereaved family,” it tweeted.

The incident was reported to police on Friday at about 2.30 am. Officers were informed about a shooting in the 1000 block of Brook Ivy Court, and when they arrived, the four bodies of the adults with fatal gunshot wounds were discovered inside the residence, Fox5 reported. The shooter’s vehicle was still in the driveway, which prompted officers to dispatch their K-9 colleagues to the surrounding area. A police dog successfully tracked Kumar to a nearby woodline, where he was captured and taken into custody.

The Gwinnett County Police have identified the victims as Kumar’s wife, Meemu Dogra, 43, of Atlanta, and Gourav Cumar, 33, Nidhi Chander, 37, and Harish Chander, 38, all of Lawrenceville.

In a statement, the police said that Kumar and Dogra’s child was the one who called 911 and provided crucial information, thereby allowing the rapid response team to reach the crime scene within minutes. The children were unharmed and have since been picked up by a family member, Fox5 reported.

The incident unfolded when an argument had started between Kumar and Dogra at their home in Atlanta. Then, they travelled to the residence on Brook Ivy Court with their child, where Gourav Cumar, Nidhi Chander, and Harish Chander lived along with two minors aged seven and 10, the police statement added.

Vijay Kumar has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of felony murder, four counts of malice murder, one count of cruelty to children in the first degree, and two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree.

A chilling family tragedy has shocked both the United States and India after an Indian-origin man allegedly shot and killed his wife and three relatives in a brutal attack inside a suburban home. The horrifying incident, which unfolded late at night, left four people dead and traumatized two young children who reportedly hid in a closet to escape the gunfire.

The case has triggered widespread outrage, grief, and questions about domestic violence, mental health, and gun safety, as investigators work to uncover the motive behind one of the most disturbing crimes involving an immigrant family in recent times.

According to local law enforcement, the shooting occurred at a residential house in the US state where the family had been living for several years. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots and screams coming from the home, prompting emergency calls to 911.

When police officers arrived at the scene, they found four victims with gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical assistance, all four were declared dead at the spot. The victims included the suspect’s wife and three close relatives, believed to be visiting the family at the time of the incident.

Inside the house, officers also found two children hiding in a closet. The children, believed to be under the age of 10, were unharmed but severely traumatized. Authorities said the children had locked themselves inside the closet after hearing gunshots and seeing their family members being attacked.

A senior police official described the scene as “one of the most heartbreaking” cases officers had handled in recent years.

The accused, an Indian-origin man in his late 30s or early 40s, was arrested without incident shortly after the shooting. Police said he was found at the scene and did not resist arrest.

The firearm used in the killings was recovered from the house. Investigators are now examining whether the weapon was legally owned and how the suspect obtained it.

Authorities have booked the accused on multiple counts of first-degree murder and related charges. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment or the death penalty, depending on the state’s laws.

Perhaps the most heart-wrenching detail of the case is the survival of the children.

According to police sources, the children ran into a closet and hid as the shooting unfolded in the house. They remained inside until officers arrived and rescued them.

Child welfare services have taken custody of the children and are arranging counseling and long-term care.

“These children witnessed unimaginable violence. Our priority is their safety and emotional well-being,” a child protection official said.

The incident has reignited conversations about the long-term psychological impact of domestic violence and gun crime on children.

While investigators have not yet disclosed a confirmed motive, early indications suggest that the shooting may have been triggered by a domestic dispute.

Police are examining whether there was a history of marital conflict, mental health issues, or financial stress within the family.

Neighbors told reporters that the couple had appeared quiet and reserved, and there had been no prior police complaints from the residence.

“We never imagined something like this could happen here. They seemed like a normal family,” a neighbor said.

Investigators are also checking phone records, emails, and recent conversations to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy.

News of the massacre has sent shockwaves through the Indian diaspora community in the United States and families back in India.

Friends and relatives of the victims have expressed disbelief and sorrow, describing the family as “loving” and “peaceful.”

“This is devastating. We are struggling to understand how this could happen,” a family friend said.

In India, the incident has been widely covered by media outlets, with many expressing concern over rising gun violence and domestic disputes involving immigrant families abroad.

The case has once again highlighted the deadly combination of domestic conflict and easy access to firearms.

Advocates for gun control argue that stricter background checks and red-flag laws could help prevent such tragedies.

“This is a textbook example of why domestic violence and gun access is a lethal mix. More safeguards are urgently needed,” said a gun safety activist.

Women’s rights groups have also called for better support systems for victims of domestic abuse, both in the US and within immigrant communities.

The accused is expected to be produced in court within days for a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors are likely to seek maximum punishment.

Police will continue to investigate the motive, the suspect’s mental state, and whether any warning signs were missed.

Authorities are also coordinating with Indian consular officials to assist relatives of the victims.

Meanwhile, the children remain under protective care as the legal process unfolds.
