Suresh Kalmadi Dead at 82: From IAF Pilot to Union Minister, 7 Defining Chapters of the CWG Scam Figure

Suresh Kalmadi dies at 82. From former IAF pilot and Union minister to the face of the CWG scam, here are 7 defining moments of his controversial career

Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Suresh Kalmadi passed away in Pune early on Tuesday (January 6, 2026) following a prolonged illness.

He was 81 and is survived by his wife, two daughters, son and grandchildren. According to reports, his mortal remains will be kept at Kalmadi House in the Erandwane area in Pune till 2 pm. The cremation will be held at Vaikunth crematorium in Navi Peth at 3.30 pm.

Born on May 1, 1944 in Pune, Kalmadi was a former Indian Air Force pilot before entering public life.

He went on to serve three terms in the Rajya Sabha between 1982 and 1996 and again in 1998, apart from his stints in the Lok Sabha in 1996 and 2004. He also held key roles in sports administration, serving as President of the Indian Olympic Association and playing a central role in promoting sporting events in India.

Kalmadi served as the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and played a key role in India’s sports administration for several years.

Kalmadi also took the initiative to start the Pune Festival, a cultural event held during the Ganesh Utsav festivities, in 1989; the Pune Vyaspeeth; and the National Games.

However, he came under national scrutiny in connection with the 2010 Commonwealth Games corruption case and was booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act for alleged misappropriation of Games funds. He was arrested in April 2011, following which the Congress suspended him from the party. The allegations pertained to the award of two contracts for the CWG, related to Games Workforce Service (GWS) and Games Planning, Project & Risk Management Services (GPPRMS).

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed a closure report in the same allegations against Kalmadi and others in January 2014.  Last year, a special court in Delhi accepted a closure report filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and gave Kalmadi a clean chit.

In his later years, Kalmadi largely withdrew from active politics due to prolonged illness.

“In the Pune Municipal Corporation, the party had dominated since 1992, but its decline began after Kalmadi’s downfall in 2011,” state Congress vice-president Mohan Joshi told Indian Express.

Veteran politician and former Union minister Suresh Kalmadi passed away at the age of 82, bringing an end to a long and controversial chapter in Indian public life. Once a decorated Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot and a prominent Congress leader, Kalmadi’s career spanned decades and included both political prominence and deep controversy, most notably his association with the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG) scam.

His death has revived public discussion around his rise in Indian politics, his contributions as a sports administrator, and the allegations that ultimately overshadowed his achievements.

Born in 1942, Suresh Kalmadi began his professional life as a pilot in the Indian Air Force, an experience that shaped his early public image as a disciplined and capable administrator. After leaving the armed forces, he entered politics and steadily rose through the ranks of the Indian National Congress, establishing himself as a strong leader in Maharashtra, particularly in Pune.

Kalmadi was elected to the Lok Sabha multiple times and went on to serve as a Union minister, holding portfolios related to sports, youth affairs, and labour during his political career. He was also widely recognized for his long association with sports administration, especially athletics.

Beyond politics, Kalmadi was a powerful figure in Indian sports. He served as the president of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for several years and played a key role in bringing international sporting events to India. His supporters credit him with promoting athletics and helping Indian sports gain greater global exposure.

Kalmadi’s influence grew further when India was awarded the hosting rights for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, a moment that was initially celebrated as a major achievement for the country.

However, Kalmadi’s legacy became inseparably linked with the CWG scam, one of India’s biggest sports-related corruption scandals. As the chairman of the CWG organizing committee, he faced allegations of massive financial irregularities, inflated contracts, and mismanagement.

In the lead-up to the Games, media reports highlighted poor infrastructure, cost overruns, and governance failures, triggering national outrage. Kalmadi was arrested in 2011 by central investigative agencies and spent several months in jail before being released on bail.

Though he consistently denied wrongdoing, the scandal severely damaged his political standing and public image. For many Indians, Kalmadi became the symbol of alleged corruption in mega sporting events.

Following the CWG controversy, Kalmadi was sidelined within the Congress party and gradually withdrew from active politics. His influence in sports administration also diminished, marking a dramatic fall from his once-powerful position.

In his later years, Kalmadi largely stayed away from the public eye. Legal proceedings related to the CWG case continued for years, keeping his name in the news long after his political career had effectively ended.

News of Suresh Kalmadi’s death has prompted mixed reactions across political and public circles. Some former colleagues remembered him as an able organizer and administrator who played a role in developing Indian athletics. Others pointed to the CWG scam as the defining chapter of his life, arguing that his legacy will always remain controversial.

Political analysts note that Kalmadi’s story reflects both the opportunities and pitfalls of Indian public life, where individuals can rise to great influence but also face sharp public scrutiny.

Suresh Kalmadi’s life was marked by stark contrasts—from flying fighter aircraft to holding key ministerial posts, and from shaping national sporting ambitions to being at the center of a corruption storm. His journey serves as a reminder of the high expectations placed on public figures and the lasting impact of controversies on political legacies.

As India reflects on his passing at 82, Kalmadi remains a figure who will be remembered not only for his early service and political achievements but also for the controversy that ultimately defined how history views him.
