According to officials, the demolition drive began close to midnight and continued into the early hours of the morning, marking one of the most high-profile after-dark civic enforcement actions in the area in recent months.
Eyewitnesses said multiple bulldozers rolled into the narrow lanes near the mosque amid a large police presence. Barricades were erected, nearby streets were sealed, and movement in the area was heavily restricted. “This was a routine civic exercise aimed at removing unauthorised constructions on public land,” an MCD official said. “The mosque was not targeted. Structures adjacent to public pathways and drains were identified following due process.”
Officials claimed that prior notices had been issued, though residents disputed this, saying they were caught off guard by the timing of the demolition.
Local residents expressed shock and anger over the late-night action, questioning why such a sensitive operation was conducted after midnight.
“Why did they come at night if everything was legal and transparent?” asked a shopkeeper whose structure was partially demolished. “People were asleep. There was panic everywhere.”

“Late-night demolitions increase fear and mistrust,” said an urban planning analyst. “Transparency is essential.”
Under municipal laws, the MCD is required to issue notices and provide time for occupants to respond or appeal before demolition. While officials insist that procedures were followed, residents have demanded access to documentation.
Legal experts say affected parties can approach courts if they believe due process was violated.
“If notice requirements were not met, residents have legal remedies,” a Delhi-based lawyer explained.
