Midnight Crackdown: 3 Bulldozers, Tear Gas Deployed as MCD Launches Late-Night Demolition Near Delhi’s Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque
Tear gas and bulldozers were deployed as the MCD carried out a late-night demolition drive near Delhi’s Faiz-e-Elahi mosque, triggering tension and heavy security
Tension gripped parts of north-east Delhi late on Tuesday night after the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) launched a late-night demolition drive near the historic Faiz-e-Elahi mosque, deploying bulldozers, heavy police force, and tear gas to clear what officials described as illegal constructions. The operation, carried out under heavy security cover, sparked anxiety among local residents and triggered brief clashes as crowds gathered to protest the sudden action.
According to officials, the demolition drive began close to midnight and continued into the early hours of the morning, marking one of the most high-profile after-dark civic enforcement actions in the area in recent months.

Eyewitnesses said multiple bulldozers rolled into the narrow lanes near the mosque amid a large police presence. Barricades were erected, nearby streets were sealed, and movement in the area was heavily restricted. As word spread about the demolition, residents poured out of their homes, leading to heated arguments and slogans against the civic authorities.
Police resorted to mild tear gas shelling to disperse the crowd after some residents allegedly tried to obstruct the demolition machinery. Officials maintained that the force used was minimal and controlled, aimed solely at restoring order and ensuring the safety of personnel on the ground.
“No baton charge was carried out. Tear gas was used only to prevent escalation and maintain law and order,” a senior police officer said, requesting anonymity.
The MCD defended the late-night operation, stating that it was part of an ongoing anti-encroachment drive and had nothing to do with any religious structure.
“This was a routine civic exercise aimed at removing unauthorised constructions on public land,” an MCD official said. “The mosque was not targeted. Structures adjacent to public pathways and drains were identified following due process.”
Officials claimed that prior notices had been issued, though residents disputed this, saying they were caught off guard by the timing of the demolition.
Local residents expressed shock and anger over the late-night action, questioning why such a sensitive operation was conducted after midnight.

“Why did they come at night if everything was legal and transparent?” asked a shopkeeper whose structure was partially demolished. “People were asleep. There was panic everywhere.”
Several residents alleged that the demolition affected shops, boundary walls, and extensions that had existed for years. They accused authorities of selective action and demanded clarity on rehabilitation or compensation.
Community members also voiced concern over the proximity of the operation to the Faiz-e-Elahi mosque, calling for restraint and dialogue.
The demolition drive quickly turned into a political flashpoint, with opposition leaders questioning the MCD’s intent and the use of force.
Leaders from opposition parties demanded:
- A detailed report on the operation
- Clarification on legal notices issued
- Assurance that religious structures were not targeted
Some leaders accused the civic body of carrying out demolitions without adequate consultation, while ruling party representatives defended the MCD, stating that no city can function if illegal encroachments are allowed to flourish.
“This is about rule of law, not religion,” a ruling party spokesperson said.
Delhi Police confirmed that additional forces were deployed to prevent any flare-up and ensure peace in the area. Patrols were intensified in nearby localities, and police maintained a presence even after the demolition ended.
“There is no situation of unrest at present. The area is peaceful,” police said in a statement issued early Wednesday morning.
No major injuries were reported, though a few residents complained of eye irritation due to tear gas exposure.
The incident once again brings focus to Delhi’s long-standing struggle with unauthorised constructions and encroachments. Over the years, multiple demolition drives conducted by civic bodies have sparked controversy, especially when carried out in densely populated or communally sensitive areas.
Urban experts note that while encroachment removal is necessary for infrastructure development and public safety, timing, communication, and rehabilitation plans play a critical role in public acceptance.

“Late-night demolitions increase fear and mistrust,” said an urban planning analyst. “Transparency is essential.”
Under municipal laws, the MCD is required to issue notices and provide time for occupants to respond or appeal before demolition. While officials insist that procedures were followed, residents have demanded access to documentation.
Legal experts say affected parties can approach courts if they believe due process was violated.
“If notice requirements were not met, residents have legal remedies,” a Delhi-based lawyer explained.
Videos showing bulldozers rolling in at night and tear gas smoke spreading through lanes quickly went viral on social media, drawing mixed reactions.
While some users supported the action as necessary to curb illegal encroachments, others criticised the use of force and timing, calling for humane enforcement.
Hashtags related to the demolition trended briefly, amplifying national attention on the incident.
MCD officials indicated that the demolition drive may continue in phases as part of a broader campaign against unauthorised structures across Delhi. However, they assured that future actions would be taken with adequate police coordination.

Meanwhile, local residents are planning to submit representations to authorities and seek legal intervention if needed.
As Delhi continues to grapple with rapid urbanisation, the incident near Faiz-e-Elahi mosque underscores the delicate balance between civic governance, public order, and community trust—a balance that remains under intense scrutiny.
