Mumbai Weather Alert: 100+ mm Rain in Just 24 Hours as IMD Issues Fresh Heavy Rain Warning
Mumbai recorded over 100 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, triggering waterlogging, traffic congestion, and transport disruptions
Mumbai witnessed another spell of intense monsoon rainfall as several parts of the city recorded more than 100 mm of rain within 24 hours, leading to waterlogging, traffic congestion, and disruption to daily life. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall to continue, accompanied by gusty winds of 50–60 kmph, prompting authorities to urge residents to remain cautious.
Although suburban train services and BEST bus operations remained largely functional on Friday morning, commuters reported delays on some local train routes due to the persistent downpour. Civic officials have also warned residents to stay alert as high tides could worsen flooding in low-lying areas.
Heavy rain began lashing Mumbai around midnight and continued through the night, inundating several parts of the city. Areas including Dadar, Andheri, Goregaon, Parel, Powai, Bandra, Malabar Hill, and Wadi Bunder experienced significant rainfall, with many roads temporarily submerged.

According to data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the island city recorded an average of 126 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8 a.m. The eastern suburbs received around 110 mm, while the western suburbs recorded approximately 114 mm. Some rain gauges registered even higher totals, with Wadi Bunder receiving 150.2 mm, Malabar Hill 145.8 mm, and Sandhurst Road 140.8 mm.
The IMD has forecast that Mumbai and its surrounding areas are likely to experience heavy to very heavy showers throughout the day. Meteorologists have also warned of gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph, increasing the possibility of fallen tree branches, temporary power disruptions, and hazardous travel conditions.
An Orange Alert has been issued for Mumbai and nearby districts, advising residents to remain vigilant as localized intense rainfall may continue over the next several hours.
The overnight rainfall led to waterlogging in several low-lying neighborhoods, slowing vehicular movement during the morning rush.
Roads in Dadar, Andheri, Goregaon, and Parel witnessed flooding, although municipal teams managed to clear accumulated water in many locations after the rainfall intensity briefly eased. Despite this improvement, authorities warned that fresh spells of heavy rain and high tides could again cause flooding in vulnerable areas.
Motorists were advised to avoid waterlogged roads wherever possible and follow traffic advisories issued by civic authorities.
Despite the heavy rainfall, Mumbai’s transport network remained relatively resilient.

Officials from Central Railway, Western Railway, and Harbour Line stated that suburban train services were operating, though some commuters experienced delays because of weather conditions. BEST buses also continued operations without major route diversions.
Authorities said continuous monitoring of railway tracks, drainage systems, and road conditions helped minimize disruptions despite the challenging weather.
Alongside heavy rainfall, the BMC warned of high tides that could slow the drainage of rainwater into the sea.
A high tide of approximately 4.28 metres was forecast during the afternoon, with another high tide expected during the early hours of the following day. During high tide, stormwater drainage becomes less effective, increasing the risk of flooding in coastal and low-lying areas.
Residents living near the coastline and flood-prone locations have been advised to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during peak tide periods.
Heavy monsoon showers have also been linked to tragic incidents in the city.
Officials confirmed that a man died after falling into an open manhole hidden beneath floodwater in the Chandivali area. Earlier in the week, an 11-year-old boy lost his life after a tree collapsed onto a school bus in Chembur during heavy rain. These incidents have renewed concerns about monsoon safety and civic preparedness.
Municipal authorities have appealed to residents to avoid walking through flooded streets where hidden hazards such as open drains and manholes may be present.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has deployed emergency response teams across the city to respond quickly to complaints related to flooding, fallen trees, blocked drains, and traffic disruptions.
Pumping stations, disaster management units, and engineering teams remain on standby as officials monitor rainfall patterns and weather forecasts around the clock.
Authorities said emergency control rooms continue functioning to coordinate responses to any rain-related emergencies.
The persistent rainfall affected daily routines for thousands of Mumbaikars.
Morning commuters encountered slower traffic, longer travel times, and crowded railway platforms. Many office-goers chose to work remotely where possible, while schools and businesses monitored weather updates before making operational decisions.
Several markets also witnessed reduced footfall due to continuous showers.
Every year, Mumbai experiences intense monsoon rainfall, making preparedness essential for both residents and civic agencies.
Experts recommend:
- Avoiding unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
- Monitoring official IMD weather updates.
- Staying away from flooded roads and underpasses.
- Keeping emergency supplies, flashlights, and charged mobile phones ready.
- Following traffic advisories issued by Mumbai Police.
- Reporting blocked drains, fallen trees, or flooding to civic authorities.
Preparedness can significantly reduce risks during periods of extreme weather.
Meteorologists expect rainfall activity to continue over the next several days as active monsoon conditions persist across Maharashtra.

While rainfall intensity may fluctuate, intermittent heavy showers remain likely in Mumbai and neighboring districts including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad. Residents should continue monitoring official forecasts before planning travel or outdoor activities.
