A routine evening at West Bengal’s Bardhaman Railway Station turned chaotic on Thursday when three passengers were injured after losing balance on a crowded platform. The incident, which took place during peak rush hour, led to panic among hundreds of commuters as railway staff and locals rushed to help those who had fallen.
According to eyewitnesses, the mishap occurred when a local train was approaching the platform. In the rush to board, several passengers jostled for space near the edge of the platform. Amid the commotion, three individuals reportedly lost their balance and fell, sustaining minor to moderate injuries. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.
Several witnesses described a scene of confusion and fear. “There was a huge rush when the train arrived. People were pushing each other to get in, and suddenly a few passengers slipped and fell,” said Ramesh Das, a commuter who was present at the station. Another passenger, Ananya Sen, said that “the crowd was uncontrollable for a few moments, and people were shouting for help.”
Local vendors and onlookers immediately alerted railway officials and helped the injured before medical assistance arrived.
Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel swiftly arrived at the scene. The injured passengers were quickly shifted to the Bardhaman Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Officials confirmed that all three victims are out of danger and are recovering.

An official from the Eastern Railway zone said an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the incident and whether crowd management measures were adequate at the time. “Our priority is the safety of passengers. We are reviewing CCTV footage to understand what led to the fall,” the official added.
Bardhaman Railway Station, one of the busiest junctions in eastern India, handles thousands of passengers daily. With multiple trains arriving within short intervals, platforms often become overcrowded, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
Commuters have long raised concerns about inadequate crowd control and the lack of sufficient barriers or markings near the platform edges. Thursday’s incident has reignited calls for improved safety infrastructure at major stations.
The Bardhaman incident has reignited concerns about platform safety and crowd management at major railway stations in West Bengal. Local commuters frequently complain about the lack of rail marshals and barricades to control crowd surges during peak hours.
Transportation experts argue that while Indian Railways has made significant upgrades in infrastructure and signaling, passenger safety management continues to lag behind, especially in suburban and semi-urban regions.
“Stations like Bardhaman handle thousands of daily commuters, yet they lack the necessary infrastructure for safe passenger movement,” said transport analyst Subhadeep Roy. “Simple solutions like designated entry and exit lanes or platform barriers could prevent such accidents.”
The incident quickly gained traction online, with many expressing concern over the state of railway safety. “It’s not the first time such an incident has happened,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Railway authorities must act before a minor scare becomes a major disaster.”
Some passengers also demanded more frequent local train services during peak hours to ease congestion and reduce platform overcrowding.
