Mumbai Rain Alert: Red Alert Issued for 3 Days (July 4–6) as Heavy Rain Batters Mumbai and Thane

Mumbai and Thane continue to witness heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for July 4–6

Heavy monsoon showers continued to lash Mumbai, Thane, and several parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Red Alert for the period between July 4 and July 6. The warning comes after days of relentless rainfall that has caused waterlogging, traffic congestion, disruptions to suburban train services in some areas, and concerns over flooding in low-lying localities. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain vigilant as more intense rainfall is expected over the weekend.

The IMD has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, with isolated locations expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall. Strong winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph may also accompany the rain, increasing the risk of fallen trees, damaged infrastructure, and localized power disruptions.

The latest warning marks the first Red Alert of the 2026 southwest monsoon season for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

According to the IMD, multiple weather systems—including an active offshore trough along the western coast, a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, and a shear zone over central India—are combining to produce widespread rainfall across Maharashtra. These conditions are expected to keep rainfall activity intense through the weekend.

A Red Alert is the highest category of weather warning issued by the IMD and indicates the possibility of severe weather capable of causing significant disruption to daily life.

Since the onset of the latest spell, several parts of Mumbai and neighboring Thane have experienced continuous rainfall.

Areas such as Andheri, Dadar, Kurla, Parel, Sion, Bandra, Powai, Goregaon, Mulund, and Borivali have witnessed intermittent heavy showers. In Thane, several roads have experienced water accumulation, slowing traffic during peak commuting hours.

The rain has reduced visibility in many areas, making driving conditions difficult. Motorists have been advised to drive cautiously and avoid flooded roads wherever possible.

Persistent rainfall has once again exposed flood-prone pockets across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Several low-lying roads reported waterlogging, resulting in slow-moving traffic and longer travel times. Municipal authorities deployed pumps and emergency teams to clear accumulated rainwater, while traffic police issued advisories asking commuters to check live traffic conditions before leaving home.

Experts warn that flooding risks could increase further during high tide, as stormwater drainage becomes less effective when sea levels are elevated.

Mumbai’s suburban railway network, the city’s lifeline, has largely continued operations despite the heavy rainfall.

However, commuters reported occasional delays on some Central and Western Railway services due to reduced speeds during intense showers. BEST bus services also continued to operate, although buses experienced delays on routes affected by traffic congestion and waterlogging.

Railway officials said teams remain stationed at vulnerable locations to monitor tracks, signaling systems, and overhead electrical equipment throughout the rain spell.

In view of the Red Alert, authorities announced precautionary closures for schools in several districts.

Schools in Thane and Palghar have been ordered to remain closed, while the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also announced the closure of schools and colleges for the afternoon session in Mumbai on Saturday to ensure student safety.

Officials said the decision was taken to minimize travel during periods of extremely heavy rainfall and to reduce risks associated with flooding and strong winds.

The BMC, disaster management teams, fire brigade personnel, and emergency response units have been placed on high alert.

Emergency control rooms are operating around the clock, while civic workers are monitoring stormwater drains, pumping stations, landslide-prone locations, and flood hotspots.

Authorities have also appealed to citizens to report:

  • Waterlogging
  • Fallen trees
  • Damaged electrical lines
  • Blocked drains
  • Building-related emergencies

Rapid response teams have been deployed across vulnerable locations to respond quickly to rain-related incidents.

Meteorologists attribute the intense rainfall to a combination of favorable monsoon conditions.

The offshore trough extending along India’s western coastline continues to draw moisture toward Maharashtra. At the same time, a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal and an active shear zone are strengthening rainfall across the region.

These atmospheric systems are expected to remain active through July 6, increasing the likelihood of prolonged heavy showers and isolated spells of extremely heavy rainfall.

Authorities have issued several safety recommendations for residents during the Red Alert period:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
  • Stay away from waterlogged roads and underpasses.
  • Do not attempt to cross flooded streets on foot or by vehicle.
  • Keep mobile phones fully charged and emergency contacts accessible.
  • Follow official IMD, BMC, and police advisories.
  • Secure loose objects on balconies and rooftops because of gusty winds.
  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms whenever possible.

Emergency officials also advised residents living in landslide-prone and low-lying areas to remain especially alert.

Continuous rainfall has affected daily routines across Mumbai and Thane.

Office commuters have faced longer travel times, while many businesses encouraged employees to work from home where feasible. Markets have reported lower footfall, and recreational activities have been curtailed because of persistent showers.

Travelers have also been advised to check the latest updates from airlines, railways, and bus operators before beginning their journeys.

Forecast models indicate that rainfall will remain active through the weekend before gradually easing, although scattered showers are expected to continue beyond July 6.

Authorities will continue monitoring rainfall intensity, tidal conditions, and river levels to determine whether additional advisories or emergency measures become necessary.

Residents are encouraged to rely only on official weather updates and avoid spreading unverified information on social media.
