BJP Sweeps Solan MC Polls: Wins 2 Top Posts as Mayor and Deputy Mayor Elections End in Massive Victory
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a decisive victory in the Solan Municipal Corporation (MC) by winning both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a significant political victory in Himachal Pradesh by winning both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts in the Solan Municipal Corporation (MC). The result is being viewed as an important boost for the BJP in the hill state, especially as it came despite the ruling Congress government holding power in Himachal Pradesh.
Veteran BJP councillor Sushma Sharma was elected Mayor after defeating the Congress candidate by an 11–7 vote margin, while BJP-backed Independent councillor Gaurav Rajput secured the Deputy Mayor’s post with an identical margin. The outcome has strengthened the BJP’s position in Solan’s civic administration and highlighted its organizational strength at the municipal level.

The mayoral election witnessed active participation from all elected councillors along with Solan MLA and Himachal Pradesh Health Minister Col. Dhani Ram Shandil, who was eligible to vote under the Municipal Corporation rules.
Despite the Congress having the backing of the local MLA, the BJP comfortably secured both top civic positions. Sushma Sharma defeated Congress candidate Meenakshi Sharma by 11 votes to 7, while Gaurav Rajput, an Independent councillor who extended support to the BJP after the municipal elections, defeated Congress nominee Narinder Kumar by the same margin.
Sushma Sharma is among the BJP’s most experienced leaders in Solan’s municipal politics.
A four-time councillor, she enjoys considerable grassroots support and has been actively involved in civic development for several years. Her victory as Mayor reflects both her political experience and the confidence reposed in her by party colleagues.
Following her election, Sharma thanked councillors for their support and assured residents that development would remain her top priority during her tenure. She pledged to work for all sections of society irrespective of political affiliation.
Another major highlight of the election was the victory of Independent councillor Gaurav Rajput for the Deputy Mayor’s post.
Although elected as an Independent during the municipal polls, Rajput later extended support to the BJP, giving the party a comfortable majority inside the Municipal Corporation.
His support proved decisive in ensuring that the BJP secured complete control over the city’s top civic leadership positions. Rajput has stated that he intends to work alongside the Mayor to accelerate development projects across all wards.
The BJP entered the election with a numerical advantage.
In the recently concluded Solan Municipal Corporation elections:
- BJP won 10 of the 17 elected councillor seats.
- Congress secured 6 seats.
- One Independent councillor—Gaurav Rajput—was elected and later supported the BJP.
This arithmetic effectively gave the BJP a working majority before the mayoral election, enabling it to comfortably win both leadership posts.

The outcome represents a setback for the Congress, particularly because the party had hoped the presence of local MLA and Health Minister Col. Dhani Ram Shandil would strengthen its chances.
However, despite his participation in the voting process, Congress candidates were unable to secure enough support to challenge the BJP-backed candidates.
Political observers believe the inability to gain the support of the Independent councillor ultimately proved costly for the Congress.
The election for Mayor and Deputy Mayor was conducted under the provisions of the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 1994, and the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Election Rules, 2012.
The Deputy Commissioner of Solan supervised the voting process, ensuring that the election was conducted in accordance with statutory rules.
Officials described the polling process as peaceful and transparent, with all eligible members participating in the election.
The BJP views the Solan result as an important political achievement.
Winning both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor positions allows the party to play a leading role in shaping civic governance, urban planning, sanitation, road infrastructure, waste management, water supply, and other municipal services.
The victory also provides momentum for the party ahead of future local and state-level political contests in Himachal Pradesh. Analysts suggest that success in urban local bodies often strengthens party organization at the grassroots level.
Following the election, the newly elected leadership emphasized development as its primary agenda.
Among the expected priorities are:
- Improving road infrastructure.
- Strengthening drinking water supply.
- Better waste management.
- Expansion of sanitation services.
- Beautification of public spaces.
- Enhanced digital civic services.
- Faster implementation of ongoing development projects.
The new civic administration has also indicated that it intends to ensure balanced development across all 17 municipal wards.

Solan is one of Himachal Pradesh’s fastest-growing urban centers and serves as an important commercial and educational hub.
The Municipal Corporation plays a crucial role in maintaining urban infrastructure, regulating development, improving public services, and implementing government welfare schemes.
Control of the civic body is therefore politically significant for both the BJP and Congress.
Following the announcement of the results, BJP workers celebrated across Solan with victory processions and congratulatory messages.
Senior party leaders described the result as evidence of public confidence in the BJP’s leadership and organizational strength.
Congress leaders, meanwhile, acknowledged the result while stating that the party would continue functioning as a constructive opposition within the Municipal Corporation.
The focus now shifts from electoral politics to governance.
Residents will closely monitor how quickly the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor begin implementing civic projects and addressing local concerns.
Issues such as traffic management, water supply, urban infrastructure, cleanliness, environmental sustainability, and public amenities are expected to dominate the Municipal Corporation’s agenda over the coming months.
