Meerut Toll Plaza Tribute 2025: Staff Salute 50+ Army Personnel Days After Brutal Attack on Soldier

Meerut Toll Plaza staff honored the Indian Army by saluting over 50 soldiers, just days after a shocking attack on a jawan. The heartfelt tribute went viral, sparking nationwide praise and calls for stronger respect and security for armed forces

Days after a video of an assault on an Army Jawan at a toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut went viral, fresh videos emerging from different toll booths are now showing workers saluting army vehicles and offering water to soldiers.

A recent clip, reportedly from Kashi toll plaza on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway where toll staff were seen offering salutes as Army trucks passed by. A video of the warm gesture has gone viral, drawing attention to a visible change in the behaviour of toll staff.

Several toll staff members were also seen saluting Army personnel passing through the toll booth in their cars.

The shift comes in the wake of strong action by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the police following the incident of August 17, when the toll staff were seen pinning the soldier, Kapil, to a lamp post and beating him with sticks, and at one point, even attacking him with a brick.

The incident unfolded at Bhuni toll plaza, located on Karnal Highway under Sarurpur police station limits.

Kapil, a soldier stationed in Jammu and Kashmir, was returning to duty from his village and travelling to Delhi with a friend. As they approached the toll plaza on the Karnal Highway, a dispute over the traffic jam and toll fee reportedly escalated into a physical assault.

The video of the assault quickly spread online, sparking widespread outrage and demands of stern action.

Anger spilt over when villagers stormed the toll plaza and vandalised the site in protest. Police soon registered a case and arrested eight accused in connection with the assault.

The NHAI also stepped in, slapping a fine of Rs 20 lakh on the toll plaza operator. Officials further initiated the process to terminate the contract of the company managing the plaza, with directions that it should not be awarded any toll-related work in the future.

Since then, reports suggest a marked change in the approach of toll workers.

In the viral videos, staff can be seen standing to attention, saluting army vehicles as they pass through, and even handing bottles of water to soldiers. Observers believe the gesture is an attempt to restore goodwill and avoid a repeat of the Meerut clash.

Authorities have said that strict monitoring of toll plazas will continue, and any misconduct will invite action.

Locals too feel that the intervention has brought accountability and improved the treatment of commuters, especially servicemen.

The incident has not only highlighted tensions at toll booths but also underlined the swift response of law enforcement and NHAI in dealing with such cases.

With videos of respectful gestures now replacing the earlier violent clip, the message appears to be that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

In a powerful gesture of respect and solidarity, toll staff in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, lined up to salute over 50 Indian Army personnel passing through their plaza earlier this week. The tribute comes just days after a disturbing attack on a soldier in the region, sparking public outrage and igniting conversations about the safety and honor of armed forces personnel in civilian spaces.

The emotional scene unfolded when a convoy of Army vehicles approached the Meerut toll plaza. Instead of simply allowing them to pass, toll workers stopped their routine tasks, formed a line, and offered a crisp salute to every soldier. Eyewitnesses report that more than 50 personnel were honored in this moving display of gratitude.

The act follows closely on the heels of a violent incident where an Army jawan was brutally attacked during a personal dispute in Meerut, an event that shook the community and led to widespread condemnation. Many citizens and veterans had expressed anger, calling for stronger measures to ensure the dignity and security of men and women in uniform.

The video of the toll staff saluting the soldiers has since gone viral across social media platforms, with thousands of Indians sharing the clip under hashtags like #RespectOurArmy and #MeerutSalutesSoldiers. Netizens praised the toll employees for recognizing the sacrifices made by the armed forces.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “A salute may be a small gesture, but it carries the weight of an entire nation’s respect. Proud of Meerut toll staff for reminding us to honor our protectors.”

Another post read: “This is the India we need — united in respect for those who guard our borders.”Local leaders and political representatives also acknowledged the gesture. A senior BJP leader from Uttar Pradesh commented, “The bravery of our soldiers must always be met with honor. I applaud the Meerut toll staff for their noble act.”

Opposition members, while praising the tribute, urged authorities to take concrete steps to prevent further attacks on soldiers in civilian areas. They highlighted the importance of enforcing strict laws against assaults on armed forces personnel, ensuring that such incidents do not repeat.

The Indian Army holds a special place in the hearts of millions. Every soldier represents courage, sacrifice, and unflinching duty toward the nation. Acts of public respect, such as the one in Meerut, not only uplift the morale of the soldiers but also serve as a reminder of the bond between civilians and the armed forces.

Security experts note that public tributes carry symbolic weight, especially in times when incidents of disrespect or violence against soldiers surface. Gestures like these reflect society’s enduring faith in the military and can inspire future generations to hold the armed forces in the highest esteem.

While the Meerut salute has been widely celebrated, it has also reignited debate over how India treats its soldiers outside of battlefields. Many veterans are calling for a national awareness campaign to foster respect for soldiers in daily life, ranging from ensuring their safety in public spaces to providing enhanced facilities for their families.

The Ministry of Defence has yet to issue a statement on the Meerut incident, but sources suggest that such acts of respect are deeply appreciated by the Army leadership, as they reinforce the trust between citizens and soldiers.
