Delhi Issues Urgent Advisory: 10,000+ Indians in Nepal Told to Exercise Caution Amid Indefinite Curfew in Kathmandu

Delhi issues urgent advisory for 10,000+ Indian nationals in Nepal as Kathmandu faces indefinite curfew. Check key safety updates, travel warnings, and security guidelines for Indians amid the ongoing unrest

New Delhi on Tuesday issued a statement advising Indian nationals residing in Nepal to “exercise caution and adhere to the steps and guidelines issued by the Nepali authorities.” The statement comes as an indefinite curfew is in place in Nepal’s capital city of Kathmandu, news agency PTI reported. The Kathmandu District Administration Office issued the curfew orders effective from 8:30 am until further notice.

The Nepal government Monday revoked the ban on social media platforms in the country that led to the death of at least 19 people and over 400 were injured as protests erupted in Kathmandu after youths – those under the age of 26, termed as Gen-Z – took to the streets in New Baneshwor, opposing the ban and government corruption. With unrest spilling fears across the border, Indian security forces placed the 1,751-km India-Nepal frontier on heightened alert, as reported by The Kathmandu Post.

The government said social media users with fake IDs have been spreading hate speech and fake news, and committing fraud and other crimes via some platforms. In a nationwide protest against the move, thousands of youths, many in their school and college uniforms, marched towards the country’s parliament on Monday with national flags and placards with slogans such as “Shut down corruption and not social media”, “Unban social media”, and “Youths against corruption”, written on them. However, they were stopped by the police who erected a barbed wire barricade.

The Government of India has issued a strong advisory to its citizens in Nepal, urging them to remain alert and exercise utmost caution as the capital city, Kathmandu, continues to remain under an indefinite curfew. The advisory comes amid escalating tensions and reports of unrest in several parts of Nepal.

According to officials, more than 10,000 Indian nationals currently reside in Nepal, with a large concentration in Kathmandu and nearby regions. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has appealed to all Indians to avoid unnecessary movement, stay indoors, and remain connected with local authorities for updates.

The indefinite curfew was imposed after widespread protests broke out in the capital, leading to disruptions in transport, markets, and public services. Nepalese security forces have been deployed across sensitive areas to maintain law and order. Reports suggest that the curfew could continue for several days until the situation stabilizes.

In its official statement, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu emphasized the following safety measures:

Avoid crowded areas and protest sites.

Carry valid identification at all times.

Follow local curfew regulations strictly.

Stay in touch with the Indian Embassy for emergency assistance.

Monitor official advisories and avoid unverified social media reports.

The embassy has also activated emergency helpline numbers for Indian citizens requiring urgent assistance.

The curfew has caused severe disruption to flights, buses, and road travel within Nepal. Tourists and business travelers have been advised to reconsider non-essential travel until the situation improves. Those already in Nepal are encouraged to register with the embassy to ensure quick communication in case of emergencies.

Diplomatic experts note that the unrest in Nepal comes at a sensitive time, as India and Nepal share not only a 1,770 km-long open border but also deep economic and cultural ties. Stability in Nepal remains crucial for cross-border trade, tourism, and regional security.

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu reassured citizens that it is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with Nepalese authorities. “We urge all Indian nationals in Nepal to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary movement until further notice,”
